Bridesmaid dresses...color or style??

Ok, so I found a style at DB that I love. It's a jersey dress and it fits the girls all really well, considering different body types. However, it does not come in the color I like the best, Cocoa. Latté is the next best thing, but I think it is too bland. And the other style of dress that DOES come in Cocoa, does nothing for me. I don't hate it, but I don't love it. I must pick them out from DB, so what do I do? Sacrifice the best color for the best style, or vice versa?? Help, help, help!

Please and thank you!!!

This is the one I love for style...in Latte

Re: Bridesmaid dresses...color or style??

  • Can you maybe add a cocoa sash or something to the latte dress?  Post pictures or links to both dresses so we can give our opinions.

For what it's worth, I like the latte color.  Since it's a neutral, you can easily jazz it up with fun accessories or bold flowers.
  • Sorry, good call on the links! Thanks, Elle!

My choices are limited by my other requirements. My dress is all chiffon. So I don't want an entirely satin bridesmaid dress. I prefer the flowing jersey fabric or the chiffon overlay. And two girls are very busty and one is far from, so we NEED a dress with straps, bigger than spaghetti.

When I looked at your links, cocoa was not a color option on either of them.  Truffle, however, was.  Would you consider the first dress in truffle? It's probably pretty similar.

Also, is there a specific reason you HAVE to get them at DB?  You'd be able to find more options if you didn't limit yourself to one store.

ETA: The truffle does look significantly darker than the cocoa on the screen, so I can understand if you wouldn't want to use it.

  • I would go for style because I really don't like the style of the one that comes in Cocoa.  It's what my MIL wore to our wedding, but I don't find it flattering on most people, or at least it would be terrible on me with a large bust.  But, if it looks good on your bridesmaids, then go for it.
  • I'd say go for color.

But also, just a thought - busty girls dont need straps. I'm a DD and actually prefer strapless to most other styles.

Why do you have to order from DB?
  • I would say style over color.  To be honest, I didn't see much difference between cocoa and latte.  I personally prefer the truffle, but you know what look you're going for and if it's too dark for your wedding look, that's fine.  But if you feel the latte is too bland, maybe a sash or other small accents on the dress (I know DB sells big flower pins in their colors, for example) will "jazz"' it up a little.

I would also say too that those of us who have a larger bust (I'm a FF cup) do tend to need something we can wear a bra with.  I'm not so sure if either dress has enough coverage for a typical bra anyway.  You'd need a low-back bra for either one. Also, for the one that comes in cocoa, I would wonder if the straps would peek through the sides since the straps on that one are thick but create a rounded neckline rather than square.

I don't think spaghetti straps (or no straps) are bad on a large-busted woman, as long as there is enough coverage and your BMs wear the right bra.  I think that for a strapless dress especially, they tend to be made with a higher back, so a typical strapless or long-line bra will work better than for the dresses you picked out.
  • Yeah, the online colors do not do them justice. I really liked the latte until I saw it in person. It's very 'neutral'. And the truffle almost has a purple undertone in person. I was very surprised by all this. Haha Cocoa is the best for my vision because it has that rich, earthy feel.

Thanks for the bra tips! I was more worried about the way each style will look on 2 girls with big ones and 1 girl with very little. They all seemed to prefer the style one because of comfort. But you are right, they will need special bras because it is kind of low cut on the sides and back.

Still mulling it over, obviously....Tongue out
  • I really don't see that big of a difference in color either, but maybe it's my computer.  I'd go with the "style" dress, though.  I've seen the second dress on and it's definitely NOT flattering to the vast majority of the population (IMHO, at least).  If your girls prefer the first dress, definitely go with that one, though.  I wore a dress that I was unhappy about in a wedding this past summer, so I'd always go for style over color, LOL!

  • I also think you should go with style, plus the Latte Dress looks soooo much more flattering. Also, I think the Latte color will look amazing, not bland!  Plus accesories will help a lot! Another idea is to ask your bridesmaids which one they like better and let them give input...

  • Thanks for all the input, ladies! I have decided to go with style! I didn't not like the Latte color, it just wasn't my favorite. But once I got the Cocoa color sample up next to my ribbon and table linens....ew. They were way too different of browns. Latte ended up being a very lovely accent color to brown in my linens and centerpieces, instead. And my MOH finally spoke up and said the style dress was much more comfortable.

And to those inquiring on why it had to be DB. My sister lives out of state and DB is the ONLY chain dress shop in a decent driving distance, 30 mins. I wanted it to be easy on her to try on, order, and alter her dress. She's also preggers, so traveling was an issue. :)

    Thanks again!
