DVD or Blu-Ray, and which brand?

FI and I are considering registering for a DVD player, and I'm wondering if it's better to go straight to Blu-Ray.  We have maybe only a dozen DVDs right now, so we could go either way.  Anyone have any advice on which player to get, and/or what's a decent brand?  We currently don't have an HDTV either (just an old CRT).  Would we need a high def television to show Blu-Rays?  We're really starting from scratch here.  We don't watch TV very much, but would love to have movie nights at home.  TIA!

Re: DVD or Blu-Ray, and which brand?

  • My dad loves his blu-ray.  He swears it is the greatest ever.  DH and I don't have a huge DVD collection but I have quite a few TV shows so we won't be switching to blu-ray anytime soon.  I just don't trust that there won't be something newer in a year/5 years or more that would make the blu-ray a waste of money.
  • if you don't have hdtv, then blu-ray is a waste of money.

  • That's my concern too, that blu-ray to DVD will be like Betamax was to VHS, rather than like the DVD is to the CD.  But I've seen that some blu-rays are backward compatible and will show DVDs, so I figured maybe it would make sense.  And I guess I was wondering too if we should be trying to upgrade to a high def tv, or if it will still be a few years before that's necessary.  They seem to be so expensive though. Thanks!

  • almost all blu-ray players will also play dvds.  also, most blu-ray movies come with the dvd version.

  • Ok, thanks, that's good to know.  I guess I was just paranoid that DVDs were going to be phased out, and that it wouldn't make sense to get a DVD player now.  But I'm probably overthinking it.

  • Sony or Samsung blu ray player IMO.  That way when you eventually upgrade to an HD TV you'll already have the blu ray player.  A blu ray will look just like a dvd on a non-HD TV.

  • comparing blu-ray to hd dvd is apples to oranges. the industry was fighting over the which hi-definition format would prevail. hd-dvd dying out is comparable to beta. beta and vhs were the two formats competing for space; once vhs won out, betas disappeared. now that blu-rays are the industry accepted hi-definition format, they will eventually start to drop in price, as will hi def movies and blu ray players. the industry is currently re-releasing almost every movie in the new format. that doesn't mean you have to replace all your dvds. in many cases, you won't even want to -- i don't need to see every pixel of "dodgeball" or all the pores on cmaeron diaz's face. but some of the big action movies or the movies with great special effects -- those i will be replacing.

  • Blu-Ray won because both Disney and the porn industry sided with Blu-Ray over HD DVD... Sad, but true.
