  • I've never seen it but I watch almost every other show on TLC. Is it worth the watch?
    image
  • I didn't watch season 1 but I might start season 2.  Looks interesting and I'm curious to hear their side of "sharing".  I don't think I could do it.  I really think it could create some self-esteem and jealousy issues for me.

  • Yeah I don't think that I would deal with that very well. I'd like to keep J all to myself, thankyouverymuch.

  • Oh it's super interesting if you're not a viewer, you should be.

I mean, it's totally not for me, but at the same time it's a good look into WHY it's good for them.

There's a lot of weirdness about some cross-relationships within their family, but they are not NEARLY as weird as they were in my head when I thought of polygamy.

  • Oh you know I watch.  It obviously works for them.  The only person that annoys me is Kody.  I do wonder about health insurance and how they can afford Kody's car but have problems with bills.

  • Ok, so here is my question, though I'm not sure if they have addressed it on the show. Legally, is he married to all of them? Is there some loophole to only two people in a marriage that they are able to get by because of the religious reasons? Or is he only legally married to one and then just committed to the rest?

He's only legally married to the first one.  There isn't a loophole - they are breaking the rules!

  • Nope, he is legally only married to wife number one, so I'm really not sure how their insurance works. I'm 99% sure they've talked about this on the show and I can't remember for the life of me how it works.

I've wondered the same thing about their bills, Ands. he drives a nice car, but they complain about money a lot. But only Kody and one of the wives work right now, right?

  • Oh ok, I was kinda wondering how that would work, if he were able to be legally married to all of them. So the other wives don't have any of the privileges that come with marriage, like with medical situations, etc? Interesting.
    image
  • Well, I think the one wife that works gets insurance for herself and her kids. I'm not sure what the other 2 wives do...

  • I watch this show.

I dislike Cody with a passion.  He's an idiot and how he managed to find four women willing to marry him is slightly beyond me.

However, I have no problem with their set up.  If it works for them, then okay.

I could never ever be apart of something like that, but there are a lot of things I couldn't do that other people are totally fine with.  The only thing that matters is that they are happy and their children are loved and raised well.  I don't care too much about the specifics.
  • Seems pretty complicated. Where do they live, what state?

  • I'm obsesed. Such an interesting social experiment.

They claim Kody's car is older, like a late 90s model. So it's paid off & that's why he's got it. He is only legally married to one, but the way the law is written in UT, I guess it's still considered illegal and polygamy if you "live the polygamist lifestyle" and live as if you're married to all of them.

But I'm not sure how health insurance works. I think I remember them mentioning it last season - maybe they aren't all insured? I don't really remember. Definitely wouldn't be able to list them all as dependants, he'd probably get tagged for insurance fraud pretty quickly with that many kids!

I think they have three incomes, Kody, Janel & Meri. Still a lot of mouths to feed on just three incomes!!
  • BUT, Meri got fired after they went public, so I think it's just Kody and Janel right now bringing in moola.

  • Ah, I guess that makes sense that they live in Utah.

Polygamy is also found in northern Arizona.

The book "Under the Banner of Heaven" by Jon Krakauer is really interesting.  It tells the history of mormonism in the US, including how polygamy became involved, outlawed, and what gave rise to the fundamentalist compounds.
  • I watch. The other 3 are just "spiritual commitments"
They do it as part of the Mormon church (the mainstream mormon church does not practice polygamy anymore, only certain mormons).

I think all the kids are on his insurance, it's not fraud if they're all his children right?

But I bet, Janelle has her kids on her Insurance and Meri had hers on ins, so that just left Kody with Christines kids.

I can't stand Kody though, and sometimes Janelle and Robin erk on my nerves too.

  • i love the show, but i think they're all kind of nuts. i'll give it to them that they seem to have raised good kids and be happy (for the most part) but there is no way I would share my husband. they definitely seem jealous a lot, especially now that the new wife is in the picture (who i cant stand most of all)... but it does make for good tv!

  • Kody drives the same car my dad does.  It's probably at the oldest 5 years old.  The base price is $65,000.

  • I just watched it for the first time last week.  It was very interesting, but I don't think I could stand any of them for long.
  • I watch it. It doesn't come on for another 20 minutes here so I'm watching the end of Teen Mom. Sister Wives is definitely interesting though.
  • There are polygamist compounds in several states, not just Utah.  In Utah they made it illegal to act like your married even if your not getting any of the benefits of marriage.  Also somehow it's not against freedom of religion to not allow them to be religiously married even though it is central to their faith.
    image
  • I just turned it on for the first time ever. Definitely not my cup of tea. Like pp's I'm pretty bad at sharing when it comes to my life/husband and it wouldn't work so well.
  • I heard a rumor that they're going to be moving to Nevada - not sure how true that is, or where I heard it.

I guess it's just Christine, Robin & Robin's kids who wouldn't be eligible for any insurance.

Kody and Robin both drive me nuts. Kody just comes off as full of himself (though, he does have four wives and a million kids fighting over him, so that could play a part in that) & Robin cries way too much.
  • They aren't part of the FLDS (the one with Warren Jeffs) but something like it. I don't think their church is as "crazy" as the FLDS.

I've read a few books by former FLDS people, but they all came from much more messed up situations. Escape by Carloyn Jessop and Stolen Innocence by Elyssa Wall (I think) are both good books.

Kody is a huge goober and gets on my nerves. I'm also weirdly fascinated by the whole dynamic with the original wives and the new wife, Robyn.
