NWR/Dog Related..vibes needed..LONG

I have been holding off on talking about this because it gets me so emotional.  As many of you know, I am a dog trainer in addition to my full time job and my #1 assistant is my dog Toby.  Toby is a 3 and a half year old cocker spaniel who is just my joy.  He loves everyone and everything and never met a car window he didn’t love to hang his head out of.  Toby is very active and very high energy and almost two months ago we started noticing him yelping occasionally when he would go to get up or jump on something.  Well, it got progressively worse..FAST.  He would cry out in pain often..and then end up shaking because it hurt so bad.  Suddenly he did not want to do all the things he normally does with absolute joy.  Walks were out, doggie daycare (at the place where I do dog training) was out.  It broke my heart to see him like this and I did not know what to do to help him.  He is not overweight and he is not old..so it did not make any sense.    We saw the vet many times and every time they would hurt him to try to find the source and then send us home with “let’s try this” and drugs..and he only got worse.  After we had spent over $1000 and the next step was to get am MRI for $1600 only to try to FIND what was wrong did I FINALLY listen to the woman who owns the facility I train at.  She recommended I try a muscle therapist/massage therapist for dogs. She said, if it is muscular at least you will know and that is $80 versus $1600 to rule something out.   Last week he went to the muscle therapist for the first time and for two days was a new dog..feeling great, etc.  Then the pain started again.  Not as bad, but was still there.  We are seeing her again today..I am hoping we can make the little guy feel better.  It breaks my heart when he looks at me like “why does it hurt mama?” and I can’t do anything to help him.  Please..send us your vibes..we need them.

  • {{{{{{{{{{HEALTHY DOG VIBES}}}}}}}}}}I know what you are going through.  My mom had to put her cocker spaniel down last year, she had cancer and just a few months ago, they awoke to find their german sheaperd had died in her sleep.  Our pets are like family and it hurts just as much when they are sick but what makes it worse is that they can't tell you what's going on.
  • Jamie!  My heart goes out to the little guy.  It stinks to see your dogs in pain, expecially younger ones.  Our 12 yo lab Casey hurt her leg about a year ago, and our only option is surgery, but on a 12 yo?!?!  So she winces every now and then and she is on glucosomine and chondrotin (sp) and it does seem to help, with some asprin when needed. Lots of warm fuzzy pats for Toby and vibes for you both!
  • I understand what you're going through Jamie. My first dog, a beagle, got arthritis at an early age. She went from being playful and energetic to yelping everytime she wanted to jump on her chair or go down the steps. And the yelping was terrible - the worst sound you could ever hear. I can still hear that sound. And the worst part was, when she wanted to get up on her chair, she'd just rest her head on it from the floor and look at you with those eyes. They tried several experimental treatments; some worked for a few weeks, other for a few months. Eventually they all failed; it was very hard. However --- that was years ago, and I know vet-meds have come a long way. Know that we are all here for you. Here's to hoping you find the right cure for your little buddy! ::::::::vibes::::::::

  • I did just start him on supplements, and if it takes a puppy massage once or twice a month to keep him feeling good I will do it!   Thank you all for your warm thoughts.

  • Big slobbery wet kisses to Toby. Do you have a hydrotherapy center near by? My moms best friend owns a pet food store and the do hydro there an it seems to be the same thing you are currently doing but is sometimes a little less stressful for the dogs. I hope everything turns out okay. I'll be thinking of you and your baby boy!!

  • :::::::::::::::::tons and tons of get well soon Toby vibes::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::A close friend of mine just had a scary thing happen to her dog. She came home and found him trembling, whining, and he couldn't move. After an MRI they found he had basically put his back out, and if they'd been 12 hours later he could have died. After a 50/50 operation he is doing well and almost walking on his own again. I really hope that muscle therapy is all that Toby requires and that he has a speedy recovery. Give him a kiss from me :0*
  • ***Lots of doggie health vibes for Toby****I can only imagine how you must feel, I would just die if something was wrong with Abbe, but hopefully things will start working out!
