Registry Question: WWYD?

Alright, so FI and I are buying our first house (hopefully closing early next week!!) however we aren't getting married until Nov. 2010.  I've had several people from my family tell me to register now so that way people know what to get us for christmas.  I feel like it's too early to register for the wedding because I'm worried a ton of things will be discontinued in the next year, however if we do then we will get things that we want/need this year at christmas.  I'm torn.  WWYD?  TIA!

That's what I was thinking, but then I'd hate to get a bunch of stuff for house warming/christmas that I'm probably going to replace with something that I register for.

I think you can go ahead and register now. Yes, somethings will change in the next year (items will be discontinued, seasonal items will change, etc) but you can just keep checking the registry to make sure to remove items that are no longer available and add new items as needed. I think it would be mostly seasonal items that you'd have to watch. If you are registering for dishes or standard kitchen items, those things are unlikely to be discontinued. And like you said, this way you can get what you need for your house!

It is pretty early, so most likely a year from now a lot of the things will be discontinued.  However, because of your family's requests, what you could consider is just starting one now, and just include some of the items you will need.  Like small appliances, utensils, towels, etc. just to get started. You could hold off on items that change frequently and are likely to be discontinued (like bedspreads, everyday dishes). You won't be getting everything you need to start a house, and you'll have plenty room to update 6-8 months from now. Trust me, you will definately still have things on your wish list one year from now!

Thanks for all your input!  I'm thinking that we should probably start a small one of things that we would buy (shower stuff for the guest bathroom, etc) but not make it an all out registry.

I would register now since you can always update your registry later.  Maybe just make it smaller for now.

I would register.  Are you having a housewarming party? You could register for that and do your wedding one later.

we're going thru a similar situation...I would just register, but maybe at just one place for now-or as many places but not a full-out registry. a mini. Even if things discontinue you can always go back and edit your registry as you need to.

It's free to register... it's never too early, I'd go ahead and do it now.  FI and I actually just went to register on this past Thursday night at Crate and Barrel... let me just tell you what a learning experience it was, too!  lol.  But anyways, most of the things that we registered for seemed pretty "standard", but that's JMO.  We actually did register for a few things on the discontinued list, in hopes we might get them for Christmas (as our wedding isn't until July)... the sales associate actually suggested we do that!  GL and have fun!  Congrats on your house!

Our family urged us to register now so they could by us Christmas gifts off of the registry.  At first I was against it, but I gave in.  I figure there's no harm.  Like PPs said, don't register for seasonal things, and/or check back often.  Also, maybe hold off on stuff that would really suck to have discontinued, like china - if you get a partial set, and they stop making it, that would be a real pain.

Thanks, I knew I could get some good advice from all of you.  We will register now for the main basic things and then update it again when it gets closer to the wedding and add much more to it.   Thanks again!

I am in a similar boat.  Just settled on a house...moving in early February 2010...wedding is Sept 25, 2010.  We went ahead and did our registries (Macy's and Crate and Barrel) after we got 2 random gifts from parents friends...we figured we rather get things that we actually want and need and that are our taste!  Depending on what you are registering for, if you stick to a department store or main brand, many of the core items they sell are in stock year and year...usually only the seasonal stuff changes. Also, FYI that you are free to change you registry at any time.  So, you may add or delete items if you find that certain things are becoming discontinued before they are bought.

Definitely register. We are in a similar situation but decided to register almost a year early because of the timing of our engagement party. Typically, people do not bring gifts to a wedding. If you are planning to have an engagement party, bridal shower, etc., a registry will really help your guests. I wouldn't worry about things being discontinued. That only really happens with seasonal items...never the appliances, flatware, china, etc. Good luck!

I'm a little late but just like PPs we are also in a similar situation and it would be nice to get stuff we will need/want for Christmas so we made a registry for things. As the wedding gets closer we will take a look and adjust it if needed. GL!
