**mollynagem** RE: photo tunaround
I think part of the thing with the Minnigs might be the quantity. The two weddings that I have seen them do were delivered in 10 weeks for one and 3 weeks for the other. However, both of them received well over 4,500 photographs completely retouched! I think it also depends on the time of year. The 3 week one was in April and the 10 week one was in August. I've heard of many of the higher end photogs in the area taking quite a while. I know the Weibners are at around 10 weeks on average as one of our friends used them in July. A friend of ours from NY got married last May and her photog averaged 12-14 weeks.
Hey Molly, Not sure when you'll get a chance to read this (I'm sure you must have a pretty hefty to-do list!), but I wanted to address this post from last week's RTD photography thread. As a recent bride (and one who was VERY much into the research and selection of her own photographer), I find it odd that you would defend the length of time the client receives their images as if it's perfectly acceptable and nothing for clients to get frustrated with. Also, I'm quite aware that several of your oft-mentioned photographers' clients are waiting 3-5 months for their images. Perhaps it would be one thing had they been forewarned before booking, but it's quite another to keep pushing back vague milestones, thereby resulting in pissed off clients. Negative word of mouth can be a killer. Especially among Knotties. Furthermore, retouching thousands of photos individually is quite the task and really not necessary. What bride is going to print 4.500 photos? Sure, spend time on the really great ones and batch edit the remainders. If someone has to spend that much time processing, it scares me what the raw product must look like out of the camera. I feel really badly for these girls waiting so long. My amazing photog (very highly in demand in the Philly area) had a teaser blog of 33 images four days after my wedding, and my disk of 800 images in my hands by two weeks. In fact, I think he processed and edited my blog on the road to a senior session in Chicago! And p.s., the slacking photog in question =/= The Wiebners.

I'm one of those girls that is anxiously waiting for pictures....nearing 4 months since my wedding.  I completely get that retouching can take forever, especially with the number of pictures they take....I just wish I had known this before so I wasn't expecting all of them at 10 weeks, only to be sitting here at almost 4 months out and only have preparation pictures....and wondering if I'm going to have to scramble to get Xmas gifts together instead of the ones I was planning on using with wedding pics.  It's just frustrating.

Oh NLB, I kind of just want to reach through the screen and give you a virtual hug. Comparing myself to you ladies, I can't believe how antsy I got at 12 days out! But unless the photographer is editing every wrinkle and blemish of every guest who wandered through the frame, the "retouching" process doesn't take 4 months. I'm sorry, it just doesn't. A gallery of more than 1k photos is overkill anyway. 99% of all brides I know (and being on TK for two years, I know plenty) have their photos anywhere between 1 week and 10 weeks post-wedding. The fact you're at 4 months makes me stabby.

Oh, and as another point of comparison, I had three photographers shooting my wedding, so you can imagine how many shots were taken that were carefully selected and edited.... in 2 weeks.

nittanylion- im with mamie on this. i feel so terrible for you that you have been waiting so long! i got so antsy after days! i had over 800 pics in my hands in less than a week. i cant imagine having to wait four months.i have a friend IRL who is on TN and her photographer actually never finished her pictures and went bankrupt. She had to file a class action lawsuit to get her pictures which took nearly a year.i definitely wouldnt be recommending, or even defending a photographer who took as long as you have had to wait. i hope you get thems soon!

A - yay! I'm so glad. In fact, I just saw Shannon yesterday because she hand-delivered my RTD prints to my office. I think you'll really enjoy your session with her. :)

Mamie, THANK YOU!!! I'm hardly ever on this board, but I had to share my experience. I had to wait about 3.5 months to get my pictures. The contract specified "about 90 days," so I got aggressive once 90 days came and went. I also wanted to use my pictures for Christmas gifts and didn't get them until mid-December. My photographer kept putting me off with, "We're really busy, but we'll have them to you soon." Soon wasn't good enough--I needed them yesterday! My experience with my photographer otherwise was not good, so this just added to the frustration. I had two photographers and got about 1600+ pictures on CD. My photographer claimed that every one was retouched and "it takes a lot of time." You know what?! I agree with your statement 100%. If every picture needs retouched, then I really have to question the quality of the photographs they're taking. In fact, I wish my photographer HADN'T retouched some of my pictures. The grass in the background ended up looking neon green in some. He could have left those alone. What I would have preferred is that he correct imperfect backgrounds and things of that nature, which he didn't bother to do. I have heard so many horror stories about wedding photographers lately, that I have very little faith in the business. The good ones are rare it seems.

I should add that when my SIL got married in RI, she had three photographers, just as many (if not more) photos, lots of special effects photo shop work, etc. and she had her pictures in less than a month. And one of my friends got married about a month after me and had her photos in under a month as well--long before I ever got mine!

Sorry it took me so long to see this and get back to you.I still think the issue might be one of quantity. Even if you take your example of 800 images in 2 weeks and do the math.... 4500 photos would then take your photographer 11+ weeks. It is easy to say that they don't all need to be retouched. However, and this may be a bad example, but if I have a horrible pimple on my wedding day, I would hope that it would be removed from every photo that I'm in. I would also want the backgrounds cleaned up, colors to be correct...etc. Since I am getting a set of DVDs with 4500 photos, every single one of them has to be retouched to the same degree as my photog has no way of knowing what ones I am going to print. It's a bit of a catch 22... I want my photos asap, but I also want them all to be retouched perfectly so that I can order prints and albums as soon as I receive them... and I also want every acceptable photo that they took.I'm not saying that anyone shouldn't be antsy when they aren't seeing their photos for weeks/months after the wedding. It sounds more to me that the frustration comes from being given one deadline and then seeing it stretched by several weeks. It you were told 14-18 weeks from the beginning, you might not be as frustrated?Did any of you on here who have been waiting so long receive a blog preview? How long did that take?

I'll give you the catch 22 aspect. However, the quantity issue is where we disagree. My 800 images are all edited -- the best ones edited carefully I'm sure.  But no bride is going to album/print/enlarge 4000 images. Not going to happen. Also, it's a bit of an exaggeration to say 4000 when it's four different version of the same image. I can convert a pic to B&W myself, thanks. Hope TX was fun!

TX? I don't mean to go back and forth over this. My point was that our photogs have no idea how many or which of the 800 or 4500 photos we are going to print or use in albums. So, they have to retouch all of them equally. I'm sure they are all gorgeous and well done. No matter the quantity, our photogs have no idea which ones we are going to use so they have to retouch all of them. Obviously no one is going to use 4500 photos. In the end I'm not sure what I would prefer. 800 in 2 weeks or thousands in 12 weeks. If I had a choice, I would probably want something in between.
