Honeymoon in Italy - advice?

A couple weeks ago, I posted on here asking for European honeymoon ideas (thanks to everyone who responded!).  We finally narrowed it down to Italy.  We definitely want to visit Rome and the Amalfi Coast. For those of you who are familiar with Italy, do you think we should stick to those two destinations for our 10 day trip? Or do you think it would be possible to do a couple days in, say, Florence? Finally, I would be interested to hear whether any of you have advice on "must see" sights in any of those places.  Thanks!

    I would most deff. visit Florence. Florence is very unique and romantic and is a good honeymoon destination.

    Also Capri is very nice. I think in 10 days I would do 3 days in 3 places and spend a 4th day in which ever one you wish to visit the most. Perhaps 3 days in Rome, 3 days at the Coast, and 4 days in Florence.

    Look into where the airports are though exactaly. You don't want to waste a lot of time in the car. Also, Google "Italy in 10 days". That will give you more specific itineraries.

    Well, I would probably recommend that you go in one airport and out another, though I don't normally.  I'd maybe fly into Florence and then go south.  From Florence, you can take the train to Rome in about 1.5 hours, and from Roma Termini (main Rome train station) you can make it to Amalfi in less than 3 hours.  It's really easy to train between cities, but you have to remember to be on the train 5 minutes before departure cause otherwise... you're not getting on.  trenitalia.com is the official website for the trains in Italy.  Bear in mind that you will probably have some changes, etc, so pack light-- carry on's, etc. 

    Don't try to pack a bilion things into the trip.  Sure, you'd probably like to go into the Uffizi, but that will take one entire day-- maybe two. 

    My last piece of advice is to walk all of these places at night.  It's quite safe and you get such a beautiful view!!

    palmettogirl - Thanks for the tip! I think I will add Florence . . . And though I've been googling honeymoon info nonstop for 2 weeks, I didn't think to Google "Italy in 10 days"

    SnippyLynn- That is incredibly helpful. Thanks! I agree, I don't want to pack too much in. We definitely want to keep it relaxing.

    You can either add Capri OR Florence.  I would say you can't do both, tbh.

    i would fly into florence, spend 3 nights, train down to rome for 3 or 4 and then train down to amalfi for the remainder of the time.

    or you can skip amalfi do a few nights in florence then a few days/nights exploring tuscany and then down to rome and fly out of there.

    Yes Sienna is just south of Florence.  I spent three weeks touring Italy, and it was definitely one of my favorites.

    We flew into Rome and stayed four nights there.  We then took a train to Naples where we had a car service pick us up and take us to Pompeii and then on to our hotel in Positano where we spent five nights.  After that we took the hydrofoil to Capri for three nights and then flew back home out of Naples.  Our itinerary and travel arrangements were a breeze but if I had to change anything I would have gone Rome - Capri - Positano so that it got more relaxing as we went.  Capri is great but had more of a party atmosphere whereas Positano was the ultimate in  relaxation.  We could also have done with one less night in Rome since we had both already been to Rome.

    I lived near Florence for 3 years.  It's not anywhere near that far south.

    The Amalfi Coast is part of Calabria, and Siena is in Tuscany.

    OP - wasn't trying to cause any confusion!  Siena was one of my favorite cities, it is about a 2 hour train ride outside of Florence.  Perfect for a day trip!  The Amalfi coast is quite a bit further south.  Regardless, you will have to do some research to see how to fit it all in without overdoing it!

    Another good resource to avoid the longer train rides is EasyJet.  The last time I visited Italy they flew out of Milan and Rome, but I've heard they've added Venice and Naples to their list.  This will help you get around the country quickly, the flights can be cheaper than the trains at times!

    *sigh* Yeah, they can be cheaper, until you add in all the extra fee's, plus the extra time in Italian security, parking, etc. 

    Just train it.  In the time it will take you to get through security for a 40 minute flight, you could have been there already on the train.

    Florence is nice b/c it's near Pisa which I enjoy. I heard Rome is awesome - which I haven't been to yet (I live on a military base in Italy and have yet to explore). Venice is small but the gondolas are well worth it (however you might find that the people in restaurants are quite rude)

    Thanks everyone!  Due to my FI's work schedule, it turns out that we really only have 8 full days rather than 10 (it will be 10 total but 2 will obviously be spent flying to and from Italy). So, as much as I'm dying to see Florence and Tuscany, that will have to be another trip.  I think we'll fly into Rome, do about 3 days there  (which I know won't even scratch the surface) then travel south by train and do a couple nights in Sorrento with possiby a day trip to Pompeii or Capri, then the remainder of the nights in Positano or Ravello, then we'll fly back to the US from Naples.

    If my FI had it his way, we'd spend the entire time relaxing on the beach; if I had it my way, we'd spend the entire time sightseeing.  So I'm hoping that splitting the time between Rome and the Amalfi Coast will be a nice compromise. SummerBoston - I'm glad you found the Amalfi Coast to be "the ultimate in relaxation" - I'll have to tell my FI that :)

    Well Positano doesn't have to be but for us it was!!  Our hotel had a great pool and complimentary boat rides twice a day which we took advantage of several times.  We didn't to any sightseeing while we were in Positano and just relaxed at the pool, went on the boat and walked around the village.  There are tons of art galleries and we really enjoyed walking around in the late afternoon and/or after dinner.  It was paradise!

    If you don't want to sit still you don't have to!  There are plenty of day trips that you can do.  We heard that Ravello is also really really nice but it is not close to the sea so if you want to do any of that it will be more difficult.  We intended to take a day trip there but we were just really enjoying laying in the sun by the pool so we never made it....

    What about renting a car and touring yourselves around Italy.  We're looking into it.  Had some friends that rented a car and toured the Amalfi coast this summer and loved it.  Anyone thought about doing that or has done it?  Would love some opinions.
