Cakes—Help!

I am about to start researching bakeries for our wedding cake.  I keep getting mixed reviews, so I'm turning to yall for help!

I want a traditional cake, with buttercream that looks smooth.  I don't like the wide, short cakes that I've seen from some bakeries.  All in all, I want a cake that is absolutely delicious and looks beautiful (After all, who doesn't??).

Have any of you had amazing experiences or those that were just horrible?  Thanks for the input!

I highly recommend Cocoa Bean.  Anthony will travel to NOLA.

I used Haydel's and wasn't impressed with the cake tasting.  However, the night of the wedding was different.  The cake was so moist and tasted so good that many people told me they were going back for seconds!  They are expensive, but I got a cake credit with my venue.  I really had a good experience with them and was very pleased with the final product.  Also, the groom's cake was a red velvet cake and it came out perfect!

You could also try Swiss Confectionary. My office got a cake from there and it was really good.

FWIW- the basic quote I received at Haydel's was for a three tier cake that is wide and short (which I don't like either).  I was told that for $1.30 more per serving they will do a triple layer cake, which will make it more proportional in my opinion.  I'm willing to pay the extra money to stay away from that short and wide look.  The basic quote was very reasonable I thought, so the extra money isn't breaking the budget.

I'm glad to hear you ended up with a moist cake from Haydel's Natmarie.  I found their cake really dry at the tasting but since they are a preferred vendor of our venue and I'll also be boxing up homemade cake, I decided to go with them and just think of the cake as a piece of decoration :-)  Hopefully it will actually end up tasing good too!

I'm going with Haydel's. I wanted a VERY traditional white almond wedding cake with buttercream frosting. I tried a few places that, to me, tasted no better than boxed cake mix. Haydel's was very good. I know a lot of people say their cake is dry, but I think it's more that it's a thicker, more packed cake (whereas, for example, cakes you make from cake mix are usually lighter and looser). For me, their cake was exactly what I was looking for, but I know it's probably not everybody's cup of tea. I received a cake credit with my caterer, but I did decide to pay to upgrade to triple-layer, which like PP have said makes the cake look taller and not so short and wide.

We JUST went and ordered our cake with Haydel's.  I'll agree with PPs--the cake samples were kind of dry at the tasting, but I've had Haydel's cakes at weddings before, and they are fantastic.  And the girl helping us was really nice.  Good experience so far!

The tasting and the final product at Haydel's are so different!  Trust me, I was beyond nervous about the dry cake, but they totally pull through!  My friend works at Haydels and told me that the samples can be a bit dry usually, but man, we loved it.  I still have my top tier from the cake and I can't wait to tear into it!!!

Wow--thanks for all the great input!  I guess I'll be calling Haydels!

I was also considering Gambinos and Ambrosia Bakery (Baton Rouge)...has anyone had an experience with either of them?
