BR Question

Did you take a childbirth class? Was it worthwhile information? Was it a huge waste of time and money?

I wasn't planning to take one, but DH mentioned something this morning that got me thinking about it.

I liked it, if for nothing else, for the hospital walk-through.  We got to see all of the equipment and monitors before hand.  It really helped H feel more comfortable, too.

Not necessary, but ours was $50 or something and was worth the calmed nerves when I went into labor.

Ours was a 5 or 6 week course (once a week, obviously).  It was just a basic childbirth info class.  We also got a tour of the maternity ward at the hospital.

It wasn't anything I didn't already know from this board and the books I read.  It was informative to DH, though.  If I could go back, I wouldn't do it again.

Oh, and our pain management technique night almost turned into an orgy.  Or at least that's what it sounded like in that room.

Yeah, I'm a planner, so it definitely was a good run down of hospital policies, how things work, where to go, etc.  I felt better knowing specifically what to expect through the whole process.

We were compulsive class takers: we took the two-part childbirth class (with tour), safe home for baby, infant CPR, breastfeeding, and DH went to Boot Camp for New Dads (which made him feel tons more confident about bringing the Woozle home).

Nope. I figured the kid is coming out whether I know how to breathe or not. lol

Honestly, with DS1 had my husband been here I probably would have (he was on deployment). And with DS2, I didn't even consider it.

All I wanted to know is if I could get an epidural in the parking lot as I pulled up to the hospital.

We're taking a 1 day intensive (8am-430pm) and then my mom will give us refreshers if we need it. I'm going to be trying to do as much as I can med-free so the distraction techniques will be beneficial. H needs to see the videos so he understands that this is not a picnic.

I think that's what i would try to do, TT. Especially now that we're coming down to the wire.

I really wasn't planning on it, but DH asked me about it this morning. I said I wasn't planning to. Then he pointed out that a friend of ours didn't take one and ended up being induced and having a c-section, which are 2 things I'm hell-bent against unless 100% necessary. I figured it's worth looking into, even for just peace of mind.

It can't hurt to be more informed, LS. Granted, I'm extremely biased as my mom is a childbirth educator and I used to go with her to classes when I was younger. But I do see them as a benfit and I"m looking forward to our's. H doesn't understand any of what I'm going through physically and mentally right now being KU (even after I shove books under his nose) and I think having a better understanding of what labor and delivery will be like will help both of us.

I also thought ahead.... I asked my mom to be his back-up when I'm in labor.

Oh I realize that. But I'd like to have more information on all the options. If I'm going to end up with a c-section, that's just how it's going to be.

Exactly. Be educated about the whole process.

See if you can score me some drugs while you are there. Or, steal me a baby ;)

i'd say worth it.  at the very least you can get a sense of how the hospital operates, the stages of labor, and meet other new parents.

We took every class they offered. It was a package deal. H and I really enjoyed the 4 week childbirth class. The baby 101 and breastfeeding classes were disappointing becuase the RN/Lacation consultant who taught them just rushed through the class. Each was only a 2-hour long session. H, however, loved the Daddy 101. The class was taught by a male NICU nurse over 4 weeks. NICU nurse covered everything from bathing and feeding to swaddling. I wish I could have taken daddy 101, lol.
