Reception timeline

Hi Ladies. I am trying to figure out what order we should do things at our reception - first dance, cake cutting, dinner (buffet), speeches, etc. I am thinking I'd like to do the first dance (we are not doing any other dances), then cut the cake, then eat (buffet), then do speeches, and then dance.   Anyone care to share their reception timeline?  Thanks!

Re: Reception timeline

  • Dinner is at 530-7
    Cake Cutting 7
    Speeches 730
First Dance 8 (or immediatly following)
Father/Daughter, Mother/Son, and Kids dance following first
  • We are cutting our cake directly after we get the reception. Our photographer recommends this so that pictures are taken. Then we will be eating dinner/doing speeches. Then first dances. Then open floor dancing.

  • I think we'll give people a few minutes to get a drink after the ceremony, then we'll do

    -parent intro
    -group bridal party intro
    -our intro
    -first dance
    -MOH/BM speeches
    -father/daughter at next slow song
    -mother/son at next slow song
    -mummers
    -cake cutting

people can be eating this whole time, there is no set dinner time.

  • Ooh, I'm intrigued by this cake cutting right away. I would be down with doing that after the first dance.

  • I have this written at home, not work, so hopefully I remember correctly.

6:15 end of ceremony/beginning of cocktail hour
7:15 grand entrance, immediately followed by serving dinner (serve bridal party first)
7:30 toasts (Best Man, then MOH, then Mother of Bride, then Bride & groom)
    7:45 cake cutting
    7:50 First Dance
    8:15 Bouquet Toss
9:00 Garter Toss, immediately followed by cake served
    12:00 reception ends

The cake cutting and serving was the hardest to figure out.  Hopefully our venue thinks this will work, I haven't run it by them yet.

  • I haven't figured out timing. But enterances, soup/salad served - while they are eating...first dance, speeches, dinner served - while eating, father/daughter and mother/son dances, cutting of the cake. Cake served - while eating, garter and bouquet tosses. After all that crap is out of the way...time to party! I don't want any of that stuff to take away time from dancing. So we are doing all the major things while people are eating.

This.  He recommended intros, first dance, start serving 1st course/ speeches at same time then after dinner cake cutting.  Then we bust a move!

  • Thanks for the post, I am trying to figure this out myself and I like all of the ideas. I was thinking our grand entrace would start the first dance (the only official dance we are doing) and then onto the buffet and toasts while we eat. But I like the idea of doing the cake cutting before that so it is over and done with (for picture reasons) and then on to eating.

I will have to talk to the DJ about this and see what he thinks.
