How to find a good DJ?

I am starting the process to find a DJ for my wedding. Any recommendations on someone affordable?  Also, how do you pick a DJ?  What questions should you ask?  How do you find the right one?

i think i would just ask around and compare prices.

there are a lot ways for music to be affordable at weddings

    i personally like live bands-but that's a personal choice

TK has some great revues on the wedding channel (sister site)

I'm using www.spinnin-tunes. I don't know if they are taking any more clients but you can always call and inquire.  www.spinin-tunes.com

Thanks for the tips!  I'll look into that.
Anyone else have a great DJ?  I can't afford a live band.

I'll look into them as well.  What made you pick them?

As of today we booked Tony from Sound Masters Entertainment.  I've spoken with Ron a couple of times and seen him MC a couple of bridal shows and he just wasn't appealling to me.  I wish we had the budget for a live band.

We are going with A Music Plus- they are a larger company who picks one of their DJs for you. They said they pick one which is a good fit for our taste, etc.
They came really highly recommended and were cheap for us because they gave us a fat discount for getting married on Sunday.

Frankly, we would never go with a big company for our photographer because we wanted to pick the actual person who is working, but we didn't care about that for the DJ  (we are kind of musically inept and its probably best left to the professionals.)

Don't use Ron!  He was awful!
  • Not sure if anyone on here will get this as it's been 3 years since this thread BUT - my dj just cancelled on me and wants to "replace" himself with Ron Severns.  I know the original DJ and he has worked an event for us before so I trusted his judgement but then I googled Ron and this comment thread came up.  Any additional comments about him?
