Same color dress as bridesmaids etiquette

My MIL is getting remarried next month and the bridal party are her 2 adult children (1 boy, 1 girl) and her FI's 2 adult children (2 girls). My SIL suggested I wear purple to match my FI who is in the bridal party. She said that all the girls in the bridal party are having their SO wear purple in their suits to match. I've always felt that wearing the same color dress as the bridesmaids was a no no in weddings. I even brought this up to the bride to see how she reacted and she said it's fine if i want to wear purple. But I feel like she wouldn't tell me if she didn't want me to. If I do wear purple I'd want it to be a different shade because i don't want to match exactly since I'm not in the bridal party. So is it improper etiquette to wear the same color dress as the bridal party or do you think it's okay?

    I was in a wedding where a random girl picked her dress to match ours and it was creepy...especially since she kept trying to be in our photos....but this isn't the same situation.

    You asked, I'd say that's sufficient and you can wear it.
    If you want to have no worries about it, wear a different color.

    you asked, she said its fine, I'm sure its fine. Its not like you buying the same dress. I would do a different shade if you can, but that is me.

    It sounds like she is fine with it. As long as the dress doesn't resemble the bridal party's dresses or isn't the same shade, it's not a big deal. Besides, most guests won't know the color until they get there so someone else is bound to have a purple dress.

    I better be okay with people wearing the same color as my BM's because my BM's are wearing black.
