Primer vs fixing spray?

So, I usually just wear powder and no liquid foundation, so I got Bare Minerals Primer to help everything stay looking good. I wore it today, and it felt fine. However, now I'm thinking about trying a liquid foundation to create a more even skin tone (although since I was dehydrated today, my frustration may have been misplaced...). My question is whether the Primer works under a liquid foundation (I got Revlon ColorStay foundation), or only under brushed-on powder. I'd gone to Ulta in the first place because I'd seen someone mention the Urban Decay Fixing Spray as a must have for their wedding, but since I wasn't planning on wearing liquid foundation, it didn't seem to be the right choice for me. did I mess up?

This stuff is driving me nuts because I have no idea what I'm doing with all these vials and tubes! Help!

Edited for clarity....

Re: Primer vs fixing spray?

  • I always use primer under my liquid foundation everyday so you're set for that. I'm actually using primer the day of AND the UD All Nighter setting spray. That stuff is AMAZING. Try going to Sephora and testing everything out. I haven't tried it, but some girls on here say that you can return stuff there, too, if it doesn't work out for you.
  • When I did my own makeup for my B&G pics, I used primer and setting spray like the PP said.  But if you're going to pick one, go with primer.  I'm not sure the spray even did anything.  I got a sample of MUFE Mist and Fix setting spray at Sephora for $10.
  • I've tried numerous primers and have always felt like I had too much on. I also felt like I could wipe it off really easy.
I'm using Urban Decay's De-Slick setting spray since I tend to get oily midway through the day. I really like it! I spray it on before I put my makeup on and spray it on when I'm done. I definitely feel like it helps and it isn't as heavy.
  • Great! Thanks so much for your input everyone!

  • BTW, I was at Ulta today and they have a ton of name brand primers and setting sprays in the travel sizes that you can get for $10-$15 if you don't want to pay for a full size.  I saw this as a suggestion in the DIY makeup thread and thought it was a great one.
  • I wear primer every day and I love it. However, I tend to wear a lot of makeup daily, so feeling like I have a few layers on my face doesn't bother me.
  • I didn't even know about the travel/trial sizes -- they all seem that size already! C'est la vie. If I do go back for the fixing spray, maybe I'll aks about a smaller, less expensive size. Thanks again everyone!
  • From what I have heard from a MUA if you have a long wear foundation that you shouldn't use a primer because it won't really work. I have a long wear foundation and was using a primer and after I was told that I stopped using primer and it actually lasted longer without. With a regular foundation the primer does make a difference.

  • I would suggest using the same type of primer as you have foundation - ie powder with powder, liquid with liquid. Otherwise you risk streaking (liquid over powder) or clumping (powder over liquid).

  • Just FYI for future brides, the Bare Minerals primer worked perfectly under the Color Stay Foundation, with Aveda dual-foundation powder over top. It was 95 degrees and humid, we spent the VAST majority of the day outside (for photos and the reception, which was at a baseball game), and my face was still flawless at the very end. SO glad I saw that posting about the Fixing Spray, and I'm so glad the primer worked with what I used it with! I know with just my regular makeup routine, my face would have been halfway to my belly button by the time the ceremony was over!
