Unless my mom had died like, THAT day, I would still laugh.

If "Your Dad" jokes were a thing, I would laugh, and my dad is no longer living. I couldn't imagine taking that personally.

BTW, I love you for saying "Your mom" ...I do it all the time.

And that's why moms like that shouldn't have a FB.

Anytime my phone rings, my H will be like, "Who's calling you?" (out of curiosity--not in like a scary possessive way, btw) and I'll be like, "Your mom" and he always says, "Oh really? What did she say."

I just stare at him blankly after that.

My friends mom has passed and he loves it when people make "Your mom" jokes to him. He loves staring at them and saying, "My mom is dead" and watch them get super uncomfortable. It works from both sides!

I honestly think if you have the balls to heckle a comedian while he or she is on stage you'd better accept anything you get. If she didn't like the joke she should have simply gotten up and left. It's the same thing we tell the sensitive girls around here -- you're not going to change the way we post, so either deal with it or GTFO.

Disclaimer - I have not read the whole post yet. So not sure if this opinion has been voiced.

I think rape jokes are not funny because rape (and sexual assault) are a very large problem that is extremely marginalized. The numbers are something like 1/3 or 1/4 women will be raped. The number of women reporting these crimes is low. Women (or victims) blame themselves. Jokes about rape can only encourage this problem.

Even in a comedy club, where it's an "anything goes" atmosphere?

Just because a comedian jokes about it, doesn't mean that they agree with it or condone it.

The whole point of being a comedian is to say the things that everyone wishes they could say. That's why it's funny.

I wouldn't bust out with racist jokes at work, because it's not the appropriate place, but when I'm with a certain group of my friends, the racist jokes go crazy because my friend and I are the only white people, and the other 4 friends in the group are black. We all find the jokes funny, so we go with it.

Uh, no it doesn't. I never said they weren't funny, I just said trying to say "Oh, they're funny because racism isn't as bad as it was 100 years ago" is bullsh*t. They're funny because they're funny. One is dealing with comedy in and of itself, the other is trying to justify comedy in a completely f*cktarded way.

The problem is that it goes beyond comedy clubs. Who hasn't heard "That math test raped me"? It's belittling.

Most people know that murder is wrong, that dead babies aren't actually funny, etc. People who have been victims of such crimes or tradgedies aren't ashamed to report them and receive support from others.

I would argue that many people do not understand what rape really is. Victims do not report it, and are blamed and not supported by society.

Ok, yes, it goes beyond the comedy club, but how old are the people that you hang out with? High school? I've heard my students say thing like what you mentioned, but people that I actually talk to don't, because that's not even funny.

They get what it is I'm sure, but they don't get how it affects the victim. I have a relative that has been raped, and she didn't report it, and I'm sure that she doesn't appreciate people that say comments about rape in a loose way, but she also knows that people are ignorant.

ALL jokes get taken too far at some point, but you also have to take jokes with a grain of salt.

I'm pretty sure he would have said the same to a guy, but it probably would have been more like "butt raped". Because that's the kind of comedian he is. And what do you think a performer is doing essentially? They are establishing dominance over an entire audience. "Hey look at me, I can sing/tell jokes/act better than you. That's why I'm up here and you're watching me."

Even though I'm a diick in your eyes, I am truly sorry that yo had to go through that. As I mentioned before, I have a relative that was raped. I don't think that rape is hilarious by any means.

But given that rape is a sensitive subject for you (as it should be), it makes sense that it's especially offensive to you, but people aren't going to stop making jokes just because they (the jokes) aren't PC.

Oh honey, I've been called every racial slur in the book throughout my freshman and sophmore years in high school. I've watched my brother almost get a gun pulled on him by a cop at the f*cking ice arena because he was convinced my brother was "stealing from someone's trunk" when he was actually getting his hockey bag out of his own damn car. I've heard stories you wouldn't believe from what my grandparents had to endure growing up in Chicago and Atlanta in the 40's and 50's, and my mom at Columbia in the 70's.

I still think racist jokes are funny.

[QUOTE]Nuggs, that's your perogative to find race jokes funny. I do too, to a certain extent. I'm not even really opposed to dead baby jokes, but as AATB alluded to, for some people it gets less funny with personal experience. You react to your experiences in one way, and I react in another. We all have the right to say what we think, as that woman did in the club. She was a heckler, and the comedian did the one thing he knew would get rid of her. I understand that.

But I'm also okay with this. It's people who are all "rape jokes are wrong and because I think they're wrong everyone else should think they're wrong as well oh and that woman should have been apologized to by Tosh also" that gets my proverbial hackles up.

I would never tell someone that they should or shouldn't be offended by something. But I also expect the same from other people.

Besides, the heifer was going to see Dane Cook. He's not exactly the Jerry Lewis of comedy.

  • I'm obviously too personally involved to speak like a level-headed person about this.

But long story short, I don't think rape jokes are funny.

but you implied that Wisc should not be offended by rape jokes, because you are not offended by race jokes?
