  We did some about six weeks before the wedding. We actually did 2 sets: one at the State Fair, and another set at Krispy Kreme & NCSU. The KK photos were to go with the favors, and I used photos from both sets for our guest book.

  We did ours at 5 months and it was plenty early.  I don't think 4 months is too late at all.

  I don't know the etiquette for this, but I would say anytime during your engagement would be just fine!  We are getting ours done at the end of September 2011 and we're getting married November 2012.  Now I realize that is super early, but we want pics taken in the park with art installation that will be moving to another city in October.  He proposed to me inside one of the art pieces, so we thought it would be fun to take some shots there (as well as other places in uptown Charlotte).  I say go for it!

  Depends on what you plan to use them for... I'm a photographer, and I once shot engagement photos for a couple just a couple weeks before their wedding. They just wanted a few to display at the reception, so it was no biggie. I've also seen friends use the engagement photos with invitations though, which would obviously require much more lead time. Check with your photog on processing time.
