I would never name my child...

http://shine.yahoo.com/parenting/most-hated-baby-names-is-your-kids-on-the-list-2480235.html?fb_action_ids=3451710703580%2C3451699263294&fb_action_types=news.reads&fb_ref=type%3Aread%2Cuser%3Ap0kYnnsgpcyW_DzIAJJcoA4NcgY&fb_source=other_multiline&code=AQDcOT48_u1iGD1t94TusofNPhYGT59O1oV-4RmryB3UjpnKhXo-oloGqQTzY4ILmh_HaCvnB_L_R0-VN12_ROVIUgjObsWsB-U4K7nqM5rqyDW4eIF2B1WdDERuglbMDOtSvOOQsOj1TfrriAhf4KnyGIZDDV7lPYon6BSX-q73Y8IwJu6GTA5zBHH9HYQsk8I#_=_

Saw this article today and realized that almost every single one of my acquaintances on FB that has a child has given him/her a name from this list.  And I tend to agree with the list.

There are also several articles about the studies on the correlation between a child's name and their anticipated success in life, which I think has some credibility to it (e.g., simply-spelled and easy-to-pronounce names /> unusually spelled/pronounced names in the career world, statistically according to these studies).

So, for purposes of an interesting discussion (not intending to offend anyone), what names make you cringe? What would you never name your child?

Me:
Just like the list in the link, the boy name "Jayden" or anything rhyming with it like "Hayden" "Braden" etc. sounds too feminine to me, and it also seems to be the popular choice of teen moms.  For girls, I would never use any sort of verb or noun that is usually identified with nature but spelled in a special snowflake way, which is the popular thing to do if you're a celebrity now (e.g., "Rayne") or others like "Destiny" and "Hope." Also, "Makayla" (or any spelling alternative) sounds like a little brat to me - it just does. Can't explain why.

On the other hand, what names do you like? I love Dominic for a boy and Natalie for a girl (however, we are fence-sitting on whether we even want kids at all right now).

Your turn!

  • I don't like the name Kaden. That seems to be popular right now.

I would also never name my child Jarkeisha. FI and I watched an episode of 16 and Pregnant yesterday (not sure why) and there was a girl on the show named Jarkeisha. We laughed something fierce.

I agree, the -ayden names are SO popular right now and therefore overdone. True, there are multiple versions of them but it's going to be difficult for a teacher who has 5 -aydens in her class. When she calls for Brayden, Hayden is going to think his name was called and vice versa.

I've always hated the name Kayla. It just sounds so weak to me. I hope to give my children classic, strong names that are classically spelled, well known, and easy to pronounce. I also like to use the "Senator" test on it. Can you picture a "Senator Kayla Smith"? Nope, I didn't think so! ;)

I'm really leaning toward Julia and David right now, and have been for years.

My all time most hated name is Kaylee.  It's horrendous.

Also?  Come to the Baby Names board on The Bump.  You will fit in there :-)

EDIT: I'm a big fan of strong names with long histories.  I love William, Abraham, Elizabeth, Victoria, Henry, Louis, and Anastasia.

Kaylee is pretty much just as bad as Kayla. I completely agree. It's great for a 2 year but not a 30 year old.<div>

  • Hmm. I actually like the name Braden but with all the variations and similar names that are so popular, I don't think we'll use it. Used to like Aidan too.

    Names I'd never use:
    Anything Belle/Bella related. So overused.
Anything with the "bo" sound (Beau, Bodhi, Boden, etc).
    Paisley
    Bailey (sounds like a dog)
Boy's names on girls (99% of them at least. There are a few I like but it's rare).

    Names I love right now:
    Serena
    Audrey
    Hazel
    Bridget
    Sienna

    Elliott
    Callum
    Emmett
    Theodore
    Ian

I'm a little obsessed with names. I lurk a lot on the baby names board on TB but I always feel weird posting on TB when I don't have kids and I'm not for a while still, haha. Maybe I need to get over that!

  • Ooh, I like the "Senator test." I will definitely use that when I have kids.

I agree with PPs about Kayla and Kaylee. I could never pinpoint why I dislike them, but I think it's like you said--it sounds too young and weak.

I think it's funny that the name Hunter is considered "violent." I'm a peace-loving hippie to the max, and I never associated the name Hunter with violence. I wouldn't name my kid that, but not for that reason. ::shrug::

My son will be named James if I ever have one. It's the only boy name I really, truly love and it's a family name. FI likes it, too.

For girls, I like Catherine, Julia, and Carla at the moment. I used to love Erica, but it sounds awful with FI's last name.

  • I really like that it's becoming more acceptable to make up names.  I know that's a really unpopular opinion, but a lot of the people in my family have names that their parents invented (none of them sound 'out there'), and I've always been envious.
  • I'd probably never name my child something that ends in "i"

    Candi, Mandi, etc.
  • One of my best friends is named Kayla, and she is one of the strongest, most confident people I know. I had never heard anyone have a problem with that name! Kaylee I agree with though, and Kylie, Kyla, etc.

  • I dislike most of the trendy names. Jackson is our guilty pleasure boy name. Our top favorite girl names were Josephine, Bridget, and Virginia. We couldn't agree on boy names. I like old Biblical names Abraham, Elijah. DH liked trendier names Porter, Graham.

  • i dont like any name thats TOO popular

     - sophia
    - hailey
    - madison
    - aidan
    - michael
    - all those -aden names

i used to like some of those names like madison and aidan but now its ruined for me

i love the boy name jace and girls names harper and audrey

names that are not too out there but not trending right now either lol
  • Lauren--I LOVE the name Harper. It's another one I've given up on, though, because FI's last name starts with an H (even though it's not pronounced) and I hate alliterative names.

  • The name Skyler has always irked me, luckily FI dislikes it even more than me so I don't have to worry about him wanting to give tha tname to any of our kids.

We have a girl named Jordan and agreed if we ever have a boy he will be named Anthony. I was surprised when FI liked "Jordan" since its not overly common for girls. If we have another girl I like the name Simone but not sure how FI will feel about it.

  • i've always hated pat.. pat anything boy, girl, ugh.  skylar is a stripper name. nuff said.  my sil is pregs and she's having a girl.  we're a little iffy on her name, but whatever, it's emary.. it sounds like a boys name.  although, some boy names on girls i like, but only when it's spelled different so you can tell it's more of a girl.  of course i can't think of any now though.  also, i don't know why, and i'm not southern AT ALL, but i sort of love the name adelaide grace.  it sounds sweet to me.
anyway, my mom told me always think up a way to make fun of the names you're thinking of picking for your kid.  if you can think of a way to make fun of it, then don't use it, save your baby some trouble because kids in school are always the meanest, and they will find a way to make fun of other kids.  my moms name is ariel and back when she was a kid, it was unheard of to have that "weird" of a name.  they tormented her.  so needless to say, i'll probably stick with good standard names.  they may be "boring" but they're still good names!

  • I agree with the whole aden thing... also I hate how every name now starts with Jay.... Jaylen, Jayda, Jaylee, ect.

I have always liked the name Zachary for a boy and I have recently started to like the name Cameron for a boy.

For girls it is tough, so many are cutesy sounding and not good for an adult.  I used to love the name Alexa, but it is so over-used now.

[QUOTE]The Senator test is a lot like my business card test.  If the name would look dorky on a business card (Sapphire Smith, CEO), or the person who picks up the business card wouldn't know whether to address their letter to Ms. Addison Smith or Mr. Addison Smith, it fails the test. A relative of mine named one daughter Jenny.  Not Jennifer, just Jenny.  For me, it fails the business card test because Jenny sounds like either a nickname or a child.

    Yep, exactly!

And I'm with you on the nickname thing. Nicknames are fine; giving your kid a nickname as a legal name is not. They will need a more professional option when they're running for Congress ;-)

My friend named her baby Bee. I knew it was going to be a little unusual, so I offered up "oh, short for Beyonce?" No. Nonononono. Bee. Short for Bandana. Beautiful. Your beautiful baby girl is NOT going to get picked on AT ALL. Moron. I've always loved Luke for a boy. If FI agrees to that [if we ever even have kids] then he can name the girl. Never really had any girl names I love.
So, maybe things don't always go as planned... Maybe that's okay. I may be alone for now, but my baby boy is on his way, and I wouldn't change a thing.
  • I agree with pretty much every name that all of you ladies have named as far as BAD names.

Except Sophia.  I have loved that name fooorreeevveerr.  Before it was really popular (or, at least before I knew it was popular).  I still want that name.

For another girl's name, I really like Hannah.  FI likes it in theory, but he has already said no because of the association with Hannah Montana *blech*.  I hate how bad associations ruin perfectly good names.

FI and I cannot agree on male names.  I would like something like Dominic, or maybe Jamie (I like it for a boy, not a girl).  But he hates those, and I hate all the names he's thought of.

I don't know what we'll do if we have a boy...

  • I do not like the den names either. My FI has his heart set on having a little girl named Bella . I know it is real popular so instead of Isabella or Annabelle I have found the name clarabelle my grandmas middle name was Clare and I would love to have a daughter named after her so I found a compromise

Agreed.  I went to school with boys and girls named Skyler and it always bugged me.  It just doesn't sit well.
  • I agree on all the "den" names too. I liked the name Lillian for a long time and after we named our daughter I realized it was super popular again, but I still think it's cute and pretty. We call her Lily right now, but Lillian sounds pretty and adultish to me. Her middle name is Antoinette sound Lillian Antoinette sounds very grown up to me. And I think it's beautiful!!!

If we have another girl I have no idea what we would name her. FI like Sophia but I said no because it is way too over done. It was the number one name for the last two years. A second girl name is going to be hard. We had Lily's name picked out before we ever got pregnant.

For boy names we like Wyatt and Cole. I originally wanted Colton but I am leaning towards just Cole because the "den" sound at the end.

The reason it sounds like a boy's name is because it is a boy's name.

I basically hate boy's names on girls.  I knew a girl in college with the name Ryan and she got all huffy when she was roomed with a boy.  Well, i-d-i-o-t, what did you expect?

I really dislike -son names on a girls, too.  They mean "son of" and make zero sense ona  girl.  The only-son name that is appropriate is Alison because it's a version of Alice.  The rest?  Oh my.  No.
  • I really love the idea of family names, so when/if we have a girl, it'll probably be Violet (my mom's maiden name) Anne (my mothers and FI's mother's middle name). The only thing I don't love about Violet is that there's not really a great nickname because I don't like Vi!

I'm pretty open with names, other than ones that are so crazy that I can't pronounce them on paper.

If you insist on giving your kids bullsh!t made-up names, at least give them a traditional middle name that is spelled traditionally so they have something to legally switch to when they've decided they've had enough of pronouncing and then spelling out Kyliendeagh for every damned person they meet because mommy wanted people to think she was you-neek and edumacated.
