How did you know...

What you wanted to be when you grew up?

I feel so lost... I keep thinking I want to do something, go back to school, then I change my mind. I do this almost monthly- I just talk myself out of everything.

Sorry, I'm having a life crisis/pity party today.

Re: How did you know...

  • I've known since I was 3 I wanted to be a scientist. I've flipped around on what kind though. There just isn't anything else I can see myself being happy doing.
  • Thanks, TR and LC. I know lots of other people feel the same way. It sucks.

I hate that I'm 31, in a dead-end job for almost 4 years. I hate working here SO MUCH but I don't have a freaking clue what to do with my life. I don't really want any more student loan debt, and I don't want to go to school for 2-4 years... I already have a Bachelors degree, and I'm really done with school.

I'd consider some sort of vocational type school, but I can't find anything I think I'd really enjoy more than what I do now.

  • I'm with you, Kiki.

I wanted to be a journalist, got all the way through college, got my B.A., and then chickened out. Then I started getting my History degree, and left school because it was getting too expensive and I wasn't sure that was what I wanted. I still don't know what I want.

  • I took a semester off because I couldn't decide. During that time I realized that a lot of my free time was spent doing creative things. So I re-enrolled and got into the art program.

My dad is a designer also, so that had a little something to do with it.

I never had a clear vision of what I wanted to be but after many years in corporate America I know this is where I don't want to be. I want to own my business and I want that business to involve dogs. H is going to build me kennels (heated/air conditioned of course) and we are planning on opening a small dog boarding business & doggy day care. I love dogs and would rather spend my days with them than being a corporate tool. When I think about accomplishing it, I get really happy. More happy than I think about being in this cubicle 5 years from now....

  • Hahah I always laugh because I remember in Kindergarden saying I wanted to be a Buffalo Jills cheerleader when I grew up. I'm soooo not the cheerleader type!

Anyways, my mom had tried to convince me to go into teaching since I was in middle school. She does nuclear medicine at a hospital and always complains how she slaves away day after day and is on call constantly, while her teacher friends have always had their summers off and are already retiring. I was very heavily into sports growing up and knew I wanted to do something with that and for a while I considered going for Physical Therapy and/or Sports Medicine. Then one day it just clicked for me that I should go for Phys Ed. I also am certified in Health because it was a dual-cert program. I love what I do and wouldn't change my career by choice, but I may be stuck going for another ceritification or something else entirely because teaching jobs are just so hard to get now.

  • I would try to think of what you would do if you didn't have to work. Would you volunteer somewhere? Where? What kind of industry? What about hobbies?

I think I could do just about any kind of work as long as I was working for a company that I cared about so I look into non-profits every now and then when I get twitchy.

I also know that if I didn't have to work, I'd be doing something with animals so I'm considering doing a vet tech program, but I still have to find one, haha.

  • Kiki I have that still...I really should have become a vet.

Now I am a miserable corporate drone...I think after my wedding I may start looking but with a month of vacation next year I want to take advantage.

In college I managed the football team and Coach Nick pulled me aside my senior year (he retired this year too) and said "do me a favor...do something you are passionate about and like me when you go to retire you'll realized you never worked." Yep....I need to get on that bandwagon and make the leap to follow some of my passions.

  • I love animals, but I could never be a vet tech- I'm way too sensitive and couldn't handle the sick/dying animals.

And um... I like playing video games? Watching TV? I tried to make a career out of TV, and that didn't really work out too well.

  • I was doing a fellowship and I was certain I wanted to continue to get my PhD in history. I was at the Newberry Library and I realized I didn't care so much about the history part. I wanted to be a librarian. So, I didn't really figure it out until my senior year of college. Then, I worked in low-level library jobs to make sure I really loved it.

  • I thought about the having to help put animals to sleep thing, but I've had the good luck to have such amazing people there when we had to put animals down that I think I'd like to be that person for someone else.

Hmm....maybe a writing job where you write reviews of TV and movies? I don't know how you get into that, though. A girl I went to high school with went into casting, but I think you'd have to live in LA or NYC to do that.

[QUOTE]Holy cow, Kiki, I've been feeling the exact same way. I keep thinking I want to go back to school, but then I realize that will delay starting a family for at least 3 or 4 more years and I don't want to do that. And I keep changing my mind on what, exactly, I want to do. I've never really had a dream career. Sorry I don't have any good advice, but just know that you're not alone.

Ditto that, TR! I used to think I wanted to work in radio for the rest of my life til I realized that I didn't make any money and the "bosses" didn't make much either - AND I would be hanging out with some people who had...questionable morals (not all stations, obv. but the station I was working in at the time - and others I had worked in). Oh, and I'd have to work a lot of weekends. There ended my "dream job."

Since then (I got out of it a year after college) - I've been working at a Corporate Housing company - I enjoy it, but I hate sales. I suck at it. I'm good at making people happy though and doing what I need to do to keep them happy - so I've thought about hospitality - but then again, that means a lot of weekends.

I need a dream job - someone dream one up for me - I'll go to school, I'm fine with school! I just dont do well in math or science. K - GO!...and while you're at it, think of one for Kiki too since I totally just made this a me post lol.
  • I'd love a change to something more creative, especially where I could work for myself. It's not financially feasible right now, though, so here I am in my cube. . .

HA! Same here! When I initially enrolled it was "Radio, Television, Film" - thus why I chose that school - I wanted the Radio and no where else seemed to offer it! I took ONE radio class - it used cart machines, reel to reel and a board from like '71 - I actually had to correct my prof. on a lot of "new age" radio stuff. *hangs head and counts student loan bills*...

By the time I graduated the department was "Mass Communication and Journalism" and now it's just "Mass Communication" - it sounds like I'm all old and stuff, but RTF was '05, MCJ was until last year.

Sad. There needs to be a job for us folks who were excited enough about journalism/broadcasting, etc and then failed miserably in this economy.
  • Oh, and I have a Public Relations degree from the Journalism Department, in the college of Mass Comm too. And a minor in computer shizz. I tell people it makes me good at talking about techie crap.

  • I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up. :(

At first I thought I wanted to be a Meteorologist so I applied to Purdue. Then I realized I hated Physics, so that was nixed.

I ended up picking Visual Communication Design because that sounded cool and I like art. I always liked making websites growing up, so I figured that was the best degree for it at Purdue.

I'm a web developer now, but I don't know if I want to do this for the rest of my life. I just don't know what else I would do. I'd like to stay in the interactive world, but I don't want to be an account exec.

I would love to do this as well if I could figure out how to do it financially.
  • I've always known that I wanted to do SOMETHING with kids-I considered pediatric nursing, but my math skills aren't so hot. I entered college as an education major, and quickly changed my mind, it just wasn't for me. I was a mass communications major for a bit, and then discovered Child Life and fell in love. Unfortunately, the field has a pretty high burn out rate, so I don't know that this will be my "forever" career. To be perfectly honest, and I'll probably get flamed for this, I would be perfectly happy staying at home w/ future kids and cooking all day.
  • I went thru dozens of dream jobs. When I entered college, I was set on becoming a marine biologist. Then I realized I hate biology and somehow discovered the journalism/media school. I fell in love with the technical process of editing. Unfortunately, most of my time at work is spent baby-sitting tape decks.

I'm still trying to decide if I want to move towards short-format editing (like movie trailers & commercials) or film coloring. I'm also struggling with the idea of giving up my incredibly monotonous, but steady job, for potentially exciting, freelance work. Not having a guaranteed paycheck after we just bought a house is really kind of scary.

  • I wanted to be an architect since I was 6 years old when my parents were talking about what kind of house we'd buy if we won the lottery. LOL. I pursued that all the way to college, started in the architecture program and I loved the creativity of it. However, after working a few CAD drafting jobs with architects and engineers, I realized that I HATED the day-to-day job of being an architect. Not to mention the fact that it is a very expensive and intense degree, only to graduate and work for close to minimum wage.

I transferred to Real Estate Development, which I loved, but of course, halfway through my degree the market crashed. I've been working as an office manager for a completely unrelated field ever since, while paying off a degree that I'm not using.

I eventually want to go back for a graduate degree, but I'm gauging the market right now to see which industries are making a comeback and will be the most stable in the future. As for now, I'm totally lost for ideas of what I want to be 'when I grow up'.

I always knew I wanted to do something with kids. First it was a pediatrician, then it was a child psychiatrist. But since math and science aren't my strong areas, I decided against those careers. I majored in Psych in college and loved it. My advisor told me there was so much I could do with it, but I am not so sure about that.

After college when I was applying for jobs, I thought it would be cool to work with kids that had social and behavioral disorders. Well, I found out in an interview that while I had great qualifications, they didn't think I was cut out for it. She sure was right. That would have been too much for me.

So, I took a position working with special needs kids and loved it. Unfortunately, it was only temporary. Then I started teaching regular preschool and enjoyed it just as much. However, before I moved to be with H, I was in school to get my teaching certificate and Master's. It is kinda on hold right now until we go back except for some online classes I can take.
