Question about reception...

Who are you supposed to use the "Reserved" seating for? Brides family? Grooms Family?? Both??

Sorry, I'm just not understanding it... Don't most people have seating assignments?

    Sorry, I don't understand your post/question.

Normally you have escort cards that tell everyone which table they are assigned. Then you can (if you want) have place cards to tell them which seat at the table is theirs.

  • If you were doing just reserved seating and then the rest of the tables open seats...  the reserved seats would be for close family.  Groom's and bride's - and these would be the tables closest to you.

  • I've never been to a wedding with any type of open seating. Everybody always was always assigned a table (Not necessarily a specific chair at the table, but at least a table). This way couples and families are gauranteed seats next to each other.

I've heard quite a few women on the Knot talk about open seating weddings, where only like the bride and groom's immediately family and the WP were the only people that had assigned tables, and couples wound up being unable to find seats next to each other, while Great Aunt Gertrude somehow was only able to get a chair with the groom's rowdy frat brothers/

If you fire a WP member, you're against America.

  • I think it just depends on where you are from and what the norm is for your social circle.  I've never been to a wedding with assigned tables/seats.  I've always seen reserved tables for the WP, bride's family, groom's family and then the rest of the tables were open.

Duh, now I understand. I'm dense sometimes.

I've never been to a wedding with reserved seating. So I would definitely advise go with what is normal for your family, friends, & area.

But as the OP also doesn't seem to understand reserved seating, it doesn't sound like a norm for her.

  • We went to a wedding once that had "Reserved for Immediate Family" tables.  We (cousins) didn't think that we were a part of that group, so sat elsewhere and then were asked to move.  It was confusing and annoying.

    I prefer assigned tables.

  • I prefer assigned seating, but the whole WP thing drives me insane. The WP sits at a table together, and they normally don't know each other, and the bride and groom aren't even there, its just awkward. I would have been so much happier sitting with my friends and/or family.

But, now that I've written this post, I realized two of my BMs won't know anybody. Sooo maybe I'll rethink this at my own wedding...

  • you can just put a cute sign on 2 tables saying reserved.  just make sure his parents and your parents know which is theirs and nobody else will sit there
  • We did table seating.  We added a more fancy table cloth overlay to the bride's family table, and groom's family table...  to make those tables stand out but that was it.

  • The reserved signs for tables that you are referring to is for both grooms & brides family.
We had reserved signs for the 5 tables closest to the head table, they were reserved for family that being grooms and brides family. We didn't do assigned seating so the only reserved tables were to be sure family could sit closest to the head table.

Thats very common in my area and really all that anyone does, rather then assigned seating.
