Cake Amount Question - Help!

Ok, I'm planning a destination wedding, so I'm relying on our venue's coordinator for everything.  She's been very helpful so far, but I do have a question about cake, and how big a cake we should order.

We have 25 guests(including us).  She recommended a 5 kg cake.  (Most cakes in the US are estimated in number of tiers or in number of slices, so right off the bat I am confused.)  5 kg is equal to about 11 lbs.  Dude, that's almost a half pound of cake per each person.

I love me some cake, but even I cannot eat a half-pound of cake in one sitting!  Especially not after having cocktails, a champagne toast and a four-course dinner that includes a dessert/fruit course!  Since it's a destination wedding, obviously we won't be packing the top tier home in our suitcase - we're going to serve the whole cake.

So, I need advice in two parts:  A) Does this sound like a crazy amount to anyone else?  B)  How should I estimate how much cake to get in kilograms for 25 people?  Any pro bakers out there who can help me??

Hmmm....how strange that they measure that way.  I will say though that I bought cake from the grocery store recently and it was doberge cake (meaning it had like 6 thin layers of mousse between 8 thin layers of cake) and just an 8 inch round cake like that was about 5 pounds.  And there is NO way that cake would have served 25. It might have been able to serve 15.

I can't answer on the kg/person, however, I think it also matters how long the guests are going to be at the reception afterward, ie how long.

You are having a lot of food already, but don't mention what everyone's doing after dinner......dancing? Staying there for a few hours? If you are serving alcohol, then people may go back for a second slice of cake a few hours after their first (especially if it's fabulous!).

You would be surprised how heavy cake can be.  You can't just think of a piece of cake.  Think about:
    density of cake
    filling
    cake boards
    cake drum
    support system
    icing
fondant (can easily add several pounds to cake)
    decorations (especially fondant ones)

With all the ingredients, and equipment or supplies can make a cake extremely heavy. Honestly, I have never heard of this "weight" expression before.

Usually Chefs go with approximately 80% of the number of guests attending the wedding... because not every guest will eat cake.. Keep in mind if it is your dessert then you need to have enough servings for every guest attending.
