What NOT to do at a wedding.

I thought it would be fun to post things we think should not be done at a wedding.

Have 20+ mins between each course at the reception.
Toasts that last over 10 mins/person.
An MC with a dirty mouth and a disgusting sense of humor.

We went to a wedding Saturday that had all these. We were gone by 12:30. The meal finished at 11:30.

Re: What NOT to do at a wedding.

  • I've never been to a wedding where the ceremony was earlier in the day than the reception (like there's a huge gap in between) & I hope I never do. I wouldn't know wtf to do with all that time in between.

I despise the electric slide, chicken dance, etc at weddings.

I mentioned in the bar thread but I don't like cash bars. I think open bars are the way to go when you're hosting people.

I don't completely hate the garter toss but when it gets trashy & the groom is taking a really long time under the bride's dress it is SO uncomfortable! No thank you.

  • I'd shoot myself if a meal dragged on for that long. I'm hoping nobody goes on forever with toasts, have a feeling I may have to draw up a list of who gets to toast and when lol.

  • All of the above.  I'll add that I hate when dinner doesn't start til like 9 pm.  That's way too freakin late.  I also cringe at grand entrances- sorry everyone who's doing one!

  • I was watching dvr'd 4 Weddings, and there were a few big don'ts....1. Don't have a long, outdoor ceremony in 100 degree weather with no shade...2. Don't take your clothes off during the reception...EVER!...3. Don't forget about bugs if you are having and outdoor evening reception...4. Maybe don't have an Elvis impersonator sing your first dance song... I'm sure there are plenty that I forgot, but those were a few of the more memorable ones!

Seen it done... It's never pretty.....

Wen't to a wedding a few weeks ago and the moral was- don't bring up stories about the bride and groom that wont be understood by people who wern't there... For minutes on end... ZZZzzzzz

I don't mind paying for drinks, but don't have catering services that steal your half drank wine just because they need to wash the glassware...

<div>Agreed. Awkward. Although I do wonder--is it considered rude not to have your WP introduced? Is that part of the "honor" of being in the WP? We don't want to do a grand entrance, but I don't want the WP to feel slighted. They will be introduced in the ceremony program, though.</div>

I would say cash bar is one of my pet peeves. But please don't judge me and think I am an alcholoic! haha. the gap in between the wedding is VERY VERY VERY common with all the weddings I have been too! Usually ceremony at a church then gap to attending recpection. I also hate long speeches that is why only best man and moh are doing one and MOh already told me she is staning up and saying congrats!

I *hate* this. I've been to two like this.

My brother and sister-in-laws. Ceremony was at 12:30. Reception started around 6. 99% of the guests were local, but still, what a pita! It's too much time to hang out somewhere but not enough in which you still can go do something. I felt like so much of my day was sucked up even though I was at home - just knowing I had to leave in a few hours...

Second was at FI's brother's wedding OOT. About 85% of guests were OOT (and staying in a hotel). It was awful! Ceremony at like 11:30 - they hosted a lunch immediately afterwards. But from 12:30 onwards... FI was in the WP, so he was out taking pictures - they literally took about 3-4 hours. I was in a hotel room with FSIL and her husband and could not go anywhere (FI had the car rental). The reception started at 7 - 40 minute drive via Toll Roads. Which then was a 9 course meal of sea food - Several of us were starving. Dinner took about 2 1/2 hours.

I'm definitely not in favor of the large break inbetween ceremony and reception. We're doing outdoor ceremony (in shade) - ideally, I'd like it to be a quick ceremony - guests go to the reception and will be provided with cookies and pastries. And we'll arrive within an hour tops.

Sorry for the rant lol I just really do not like the long break in between.

I dislike the toast when it becomes a roast. I was at FSIL's wedding last year when her MOH (other FSIL) was doing the toast which pretty much turned into a roast - made fun of her, told really embarrasing stories. I felt awkward! I kept giving FSIL a look of horror trying to read her reaction.

Other than those, I pretty much agree with all PP.

  • DONT GET IN A FIGHT. lol. FI asked me last night after watching a movie where there was a fight at birthday party and he was like "i wonder if that really happens at big things like weddings and such". I said UM YEAH I have seen a few. Just tacky lol

I also say dont  have whoever is marrying you go into all the little bit of details about how he met you and your FI and the planning of the ceremony down to email quotes when its 95 degrees out and your guests are melting in a church with no a/c for over an hour by that point. Keep it simple.

When BM or MOH are giving speeches pray they are sober enough to not make inappropriate remarks that would make your parents cringe.

I can only imagine some of the things that have been said in speeches... makes think of The Wedding Singer.

  • I've been to several weddings where the toasts were long and rambling--I hate those!  I'm having two Matrons of Honor and I think that I'll either ask them to pick who will talk or combine and no toast should go longer than 5 minutes.

When I was MOH 7 years ago, I told a very short and cute story about the bride and I sneaking out of bed when we were 3 years old and how it exemplified our personalities and relationship, summed it up by saying that her husband would now be the one going on adventures with her and that was it.  I don't think that it even hit 3 1/2 minutes and everyone loved it--especially because the other three toasts (two best men, Matron of Honor, and myself total) were long and wordy.

I also don't like cash bars.

I've never seen this happen, but I've read about it so many times--men proposing to girlfriends at weddings.  Completely inappropriate!

  • i have been to weddings at which multiple people stood up to give speeches. It used to be that only the best man did this. Speeches interrupt the flow of the evening, and I think that people just sit and wait through them to the good stuff. Unless someone is a quick and funny speaker, sit down! I'm not a fan of the DJ or MC leading the guests in 'activities'. Ugh. Seems like camp. I went to one wedding on a Saturday night, which for religious reasons could not start until after 9PM. We didn't eat until probably 11PM! No one really danced, no one was in a partying mood. It was a beautiful but very dull wedding. I wouldn't spend money on favors that no one will really care about, such as little throw aways with your names printed on them.
