Daily Topic Thread: Martha Who?? Monday

Good Morning Ladies!!

It's time for Martha Who Monday but before we get into this week's project, let's share a photo of your favourite DIY wedding project to date. What have you already made that you just love and that you are so excited for friends and family to see? If you haven't made anything or have a "dream" favourite DIY project, let's see it! Don't forget to explain why it's your fave ;)

Now it's time to focus on this week's project....

Pomanders and/or Kissing Balls

What are they and where do they come from?

The Pomander which is also knows as the kissing ball originated in England during the Middle Ages. It was made of evergreens and it was hung over the door way, like mistletoe, serving as an omen for good will. Just like everything else, it evolved with addition of lavender and rosemary which signified loyalty and devotion; the "kissing ball" began to symbolize romance. With romance being the main idea behind pomanders, it is no surprise that they are now used in weddings as modern flower arrangements.

There are so many different ways to create a pomander. When I first considered attempting this DIY project, I did a lot of googling and came across a variety of tutorials using many different types on materials; crepe paper, silk flowers, tulle, and even muffin liners! It's a fairly easy project and can be used for not only weddings but to add decor to any special occasion. Below you will find links to tutorials for various styles of pomanders.

My recipe:

I attempted my own pomanders this past weekend and had a blast putting them together. I took it one step further and made a wreath as well. I thought I'd add my own "recipe" for anyone who wishes to attempt one like mine.

Styrofoam ball - 6" (Walmart - $4 / Michael's $9)

Silk flower linked bouquet (wedding stock @ Michael's - 40% off $17 / enough for 2 balls)

Marabou boa for crafts - ($4 @ Michael's)

Loose feathers - ($4 at Michael's for bag/ $2 off ebay)

Glue gun/glue

Ribbon

Wired garland with beads/jewels (wedding stock @ Michael's on clearance - $5 for 6')

  • I don't have any pictures of them yet, but my favorite DIY has been the center peices!! When I get them all together I will post a pic in one of the FB albums for any one who wants to see.
Meech, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the way you pomandors and wreath turned out! they look FANTABULOUS!!
  • No pics for mine but I did attempt some tissue paper poms. They aren't that bad... I was thinking of using them to hang and or place on the card table or just any other random place that needs a little "spicing" up. Now that I know I can make them I will probably wait until we meet with the venue 3 months out to add any other DIY things. I'm thinking of making my own ribbon sashes for the chairs, but like I said I will have to wait to go back and measure and think of more things :)
  • I have a hard time picking my favourite, its between 2, my aisle runner (which I HATED making but love now lol) and my bouquets.

I posted a 'how to' about the bouquets on here a couple days ago or so...

OH, and we did pomanders too, the 2 older flower girls will be carrying them :)

  • I love your runner Britt - it's really really lovely :)
I'm soooo kicking myself for not just DIY my flower girl's kissing ball. I never expected to be able to make them that easily (or to have them look so pretty).

  • I might add a 'how to' for the aisle runner to my blog too, that's the next one I've been considering doing :)
  • my absolute favorite DIY is my shoes! i love how they turned out and i can't wait to wear them!

  • Ditto on the shoes, Kelly!!

My favorite so far is the DIY fabric flower bouts that I'm working on!

I worked some more on these this weekend. This was my mock-up just to make sure it would look good enough to actually make 10 of them! I'm going to take out the little gold flower and replace it with a tiny little ball, I've purchased bleached peacock feathers that are much fuller, and I've started making the various colors of fabric flowers that I will use as variations and I think I will add striped ribbon to the bottom instead of the solid wrap.

I also made a pomander!!! It takes forever though! It's made out of fabric and it looks so pretty!! I don't have a picture of it yet though. But here's the tutorial. I used 3' balls instead though, since the 4' turned out too big. The fabric sticks out quite a bit so it will inevitably be about two inches wider once you have all of the fabric on it. http://sabrinasplanningbio.weebly.com/fabric-pomander-balls.html
  • Gorgeous stuff ladies!!!

My favorite has been our chair signs. They were totally unnecessary budget-wise and my most expensive DIY project. But FI always says I'm a know-it-all so when I saw signs made with these sayings on Pinterest (different style sign though) I knew I had to make them. They came out really elegant but have so much attitude at the same time. I'm going to tie the signs together with black or royal blue ribbon (royal blue + black = our colors). My hope is to hang them over our respective night stands after the wedding too so he always remembers who is right.

  • @romamor: Oh wow, I've never seen a nonfloral bout that's that pretty! I absolutely love it!

Ladies, I'm so uncrafty. I really want to try something DIY but I just don't know where to start. I don't want it to be something too *important* in case it looks like crap. At this point I have nothing that is DIY. I was thinking of trying to create some kind of card box?

I love seeing all you faves ladies!

Smartlypretty - a card box is something good to try out. I find with each project, I want to do something more complex. I can't believe I wasn't even going to do anything but invitations myself when I first started out!

  • No pictures of any DIy's I've done (as none are completed yet) Embarassed

Those shoes are adorable Kelly! How did you make those?

I'm thinking of making kissing balls to decorate the ceremony site, we'll have to see how adventurous I get in the DIY realm of weddings.

thanks for the compliments everyone! i followed this tutorial: http://lauryngallowayblog.com/diy-glitter-heels/

i bought plain black heels from target, they were $30. Then I got lustre modge podge and 2 colors of fine glitter (i used the martha stewart line from michael's, each jar was like $4). we had sandpaper in the basement from when we painted our house, so i used that to buff up my shoes. you mix the glitter and the modge podge together, and then paint it on the shoes. i only did 2 coats, but the coverage was great and you'd never know they had been black before!

  • Those shoes are great Kelly, I want to try them in Purple- since I have no crinoline to dye purple! I don't have any DIY to show for right now, I'm hoping to come up with some soon. You ladies are so crafty :)
  • smartlypretty - My first project was my cardbox, and things just evolved from there :)
