XP: Urgent Grammar Question

Hi Ladies,

I am about to send my ceremony wording to the person making my programs, and I am not sure about one thing.  We are doing a Mothers Rose Ceremony, where we will each present a rose to our own mother.  I have this in the program as "Mothers Rose Ceremony", but now I'm second-guessing myself on puncuation.  Should it be "Mothers' Rose Ceremony"?  I don't think I need the apostrophe, but this wedding is clearly frying my brain!  Or any alternative wording suggestions?  I realize I could just put "Rose Ceremony", but I would really like the mothers to be specified.  TIA!

Re: XP: Urgent Grammar Question

  • Well, you could do it either way (with apostrophe or without), but it would change the meaning of the phrase.

Mothers' Rose Ceremony implies that the ceremony belongs to the mothers, or that the roses belong to the mothers. Mothers Rose Ceremony makes the word "mothers" an adjective decribing the ceremony.

I personally think both options just sound kind of odd when read aloud. Perhaps you could just called it a Rose Ceremony and then have a little descriptor printed underneath letting guests know that you will be presenting roses to your mothers as a sign of....whatever.

It's technically listed this way in the Catholic church.
