I went on a cruise a few summers ago with family.  I absolutely LOVED it and can't wait to go back.  You won't really have "beach time."  I didn't break out my suit once.  And the excursions were adventure and outdoorsy.  But if that's you, you will LOVE it!!

HIGHLY recommended excursion.  It's a little pricey but totally worth it.

I traveled HAL.  Wasn't the biggest fan of the crowd, a little older.  But anything similar to this would be amazing.

  • I'm very anti-cruise if you're going to AK.  You really just don't see any of the real AK if you stay on a cruise ship the whole time.  There's so much inland and AK is such a huge place, you really have to get on land (other than just excursions) to really experience it.

I highly recommend Denali, Homer, Seward, Wrangell-St. Elias, Anchorage - for the most part in that order.

H and I backpacked AK a few summers ago and it was an amazing trip.  We started in Juneau, went to Glacier Bay, took a ferry up to Skagway, drove through the Yukon down to Wrangell-St. Elias, drove up to Anchorage, took a train to Denali, back to Anchorage and then down the Kenai Peninsual to Seward, Soldotna and Homer.  That's probably a bit much, but if I had it all to do over again, I'd do the same thing.

We did a salmon fishing charter in Soldotna and caught several huge salmon.  We did the Kenai Fjords catamaran tour out of Seward - it takes you right up to tidewater glaciers and we saw TONS of wildlife.  You really can't miss Denali.

When we went, I bought the Great Alaskan Tour Saver.  We paid $100 and ended up saving well over $2k with it.  It has 2-for-1 deals on hotel nights, tours, train tickets, rental car days, etc.  I used that and Frommer's Guide to build our trip.

I'm not sure what all info you're looking for, but if you're more specific, I have a ton of info I'd be willing to share.

  • I loved my Alaskan cruise.  It was both my first time to Alaska and my first cruise.  I thought it was an excellent way to get a taste of Alaska.  So many of the cities that you visit via a cruise are not easily reached by car, so chances are you might not ever see them otherwise.  I loved the days when the ship was moving through the inside passage and you could stay on the deck and look at the beautiful scenery.

My cruise was in June and I had to plan for all kinds of weather.  It would be cold and rainy and then the sun would break through and it would be 80 degrees.  It's definitely more of an outdoorsy place, so don't plan on lounging on a beach.  But I thought it was amazing.

I went on Norwegian, which I thought was a great cruise line for the younger crowd.  It was very casual, which I liked.  The biggest difference about NCL is that they don't do formal dinners, so if you have your heart set on dressing up each night and sitting down to a lobster dinner, then you'll want to pick a different cruise line.  Most Alaskan cruises leave from either Seattle or Vancouver, both of which are great destinations themselves!

  • A few years back I went on an alaskan cruise with my family... it was AMAZING! It was a 10-day Carnival cruise, from Anchorage to Vancouver, stopped in sitka, Juneau, Skagway and ketchikan. We did excursions in every port and I enjoyed every minute of it... I would really reccommend it, especially if you like nature and adventure... :)
