Nevada-Las Vegas

Wedding photographer needs a wedding photographer!

Please help!

My husband and I are driving ourselves up the wall trying to find a photographer in Las Vegas for our vow renewal.  We originally got married in a courthouse and so for years we've been saying that we need a 'real' wedding, so we've decided to splurge a little.

The problem is that we're wedding photographers in Santa Barbara and can't help but be EXTREMELY picky.  The pictures are the only important thing to us and so I'm going all out to make everything as picture friendly as we can.

What we want is to have HUGE panoramic photos of ourselves hanging in the family room, but out of all of the photographers we've contacted so far, none of them use professional equipment, let alone the level of equipment needed to make a rreally large print look nice.

Just from Google searching, I've seen some cool web galleries, but web galleries are such low resolution images that even a bottom of the line SLR looks good.

I contacted a few photographers to find out what kind of cameras and lenses they used and was shocked.

I was hung up on three times, I had another one say "we don't give that information out" (what??) and all of the rest reluctantly told me what they shot with and all of the cameras were lower end Canon 40D, 20D, Nikon D40, D90, etc.

Out of all the people that I called, the highest end cameras were a Nikon D300 and a Canon 5D.  The D300 is alright.......for a backup camera, but isn't the greatest.  The Canon 5D is better, but I didn't get a great vibe from the person I spoke with.

NONE of them owned studio lighting.

Please help - I don't mean to offend any Vegas photographers or burn bridges, but I'm kinda frustrated that none of them have studios, almost none of them have pro level equipment and even fewer have backup equipment and most of them do not include retouching.  While we could do the retouching ourselves, it's something I'd rather see included in the price.

I'm also looking to add on a bridal portrait session and MAYBE a bridal boudoir session to surprise hubby, so the studio is important.  It also kinda shows that they won't suddenly go out of business either.

I'm not looking for a 'cheap' photographer and I'm not looking for a strip tour.  If they're lower priced, but still great, I'm good with that, but I know that pro level gear means higher prices and I'm completely prepared to pay what we charge in Cali.

We decided on Las Vegas as our destination, as it's WAY cheaper than trying to pay for a wedding venue in California, but I'm strongly against using any of the  Vegas chapels; All the ones we called wanted us to use their horrible in house photographers and then overcharge for each print and don't give the rights to print them ourselves.  It felt like a borderline scam and a complete monopoly and I refuse to give them dime one.

After browsing the forums a bit, I only see two mentioned a lot here.  Their style is okay, but the lack of retouching and lower end equipment isn't for me.  I also don't want to sift through over a thousand identical pictures to find one I like.  I looked through a few of their full wedding galleries and saw out of focus images and there'd be dozens of identical shots, which I don't understand.

I think for what they charge their service is good though, but they just don't have the kind of polish I'm looking for.

Also, and this really ticks me off, most of the photographer reviews on this board read like advertisements.  If vendors want to make fake reviews, at least make them look real and avoid using identical wording and cheesy pitch lines...

I'm not going to point out specific posts, but it was the clincher when I was deciding which photographers NOT to use.

Fake reviews are an awful business practice and hurts legitimate vendors (again, speaking as a photographer myself).

If there's any already married brides that can tell me anything about their photographers' equipment, or upcoming brides that maybe know what kind of cameras their photographers use, I would be eternally grateful to you all for lending us a hand!

I've searched day and night for two weeks, calling and reading blogs and I just don't see what I'm looking for :(

Seriously Stressed in Santa Barbara,

Karen and Ben

Hi there... not sure if this will help, but I've actually booked Olga Wilson of Dott Photography for our wedding. I thought her photos were fun, and different from any of the others I've seen on my own searches. You can check her out at: www.dottphotography.com.

    Hope that helps... good luck!

J&J Photography at www.jandjphotos.com or John Michael Cooper of www.altf.com ?  I know altf.com is one of the best (and probably most expensive) photographers in Las Vegas, and last time I saw him he was using a Nikon D3.

I understand the preference to avoid paying for in-house photographers.  Golf resorts may be the most likely choices if you want to avoid an in-house photographer or a vendor fee.  Other options might be the Ritz Carlton, possibly Four Seasons, or some non-casino resorts.

What are you referring to as far as professional equipment?  I frequently interact with many wedding photographers about professional information, and their cameras may include Canon 40D, 7D, 5D, 5D mark II, 1Ds mark II or III, 1D mark II or III, or Nikon D300, D700, D3, D3s or D3x.  Those who use the D3x or 1Ds mark III are much less common than the ones who use the 5D mark II (extremely common among professionals like Jessica Claire, Tony Hoffer, Bobby Earle, Spencer Boerup, Ed Pingol, and others) or cameras that have less than 20mp resolution.  Since you're considering large panoramas, have you seen enlargements of photos taken with some of the above specified cameras and compared the lower resolution ones directly to the higher resolution (or full-frame sensor cameras vs. crop-sensor)?  If so, did you see a significant difference?

I have met Olga and think she is a good photographer as well.

    Good luck in your search.

    Hello!

Well 1st off I will let you know that I am using http://mikelphotos.com/ and I don't think most of us girls ask about equipment, we focuse more on the style and what can fit our budgets.

Now, as far as the chapels, you are going to find that they ALL use there own, you can pay an outside fee if you find a chapel who will let you.

Also....I am sorry that you feel that vendors are posting reviews on this board, cause to be honest...WE CALL VENDORS OUT!! So if you read a review it is from a REAL BRIDE, so please be aware that we pay attention to vendors and are VERY HARSH about letting them know that they are not welcomed.

So Good Luck with your vow renewal.

Holy crap, Olga Wilson is incredible!  That's definitely on my short list!!!

I looked at ALTF before (it was the first search result in Google) and liked his work a lot, but some of it was a bit 'out there' for me.  Really cool imagination though.

I wasn't crazy about Mike L's skin tones in his portraits, they looked a bit green and he's using a Nikon D40 and D300 (btw, there's a program called Opanda Exif reader that will tell you what camera a photographer is using).

I had never heard of Olga until that post and she's definitely on my 'must call' list, but there's got to be some more gems out there.

My thoughts EXACTLY about Olga-- I'm beyond excited for our photos!

A few others I thought were fun: The Cohens (http://www.thecohensphoto.com/), Chelsea Nicole (http://chelsea-nicole.com/) and Red Rock Studios (http://www.redrockstudioslv.com/index.html)

Have you tried searching pictage or other sites that have photographers listed by region?

I didn't pay attention to the camera my photographer was using on my wedding day, but she did use lighting, and had at least one other backup with her. I used Jeniffer LaRocca at Digs.

My other top choices were, Studio ATG and Chelsea Nicole.

Good luck with planning and Congrats on the vow renewal.

Chelsea Nicole is also really good.  I guess I didn't really look further into her site because of the music, but after checking out some of her work, I really like her too!

First let me say, Welcome to The Knot! The girls on this board are very friendly and very helpful! I would have been lost in Vegas without their help!
I don't want to be debbie downer, but I would edit your post about your profession. I used to be the MOD for my local board and if you are in the wedding profession and mention it on the boards you are supposed to be removed from the community immediately (it is listed in the terms and conditions when you sign up with the knot).
I completely understand where you are coming from looking for the perfect photographer. That was our "splurge" for the wedding. I had a problem finding someone that we loved in Vegas so we brought a local photographer out with us. I do however LOVE Chelsea Nicole, she has a similar style to our photographer.

I know Deacon Tyler has been in the business for quite a few years.  Can't speak to the exact models but I'm pretty sure he's a Nikon guy.

Also, I agree with pp.  The reviews on this board are from actual brides.   Anytime someone has tried to come on and sell a service they are shut down pretty quickly.

I almost used Cohen Photography but went with T0ner Photography because they were cheaper. I don't know what kind of equip. either of them use because like what other gals said all I cared about was the price and the end result - the pictures!

    Good luck with your search!

Is there any way you could bring your own photographer? I'm in much the same boat you are and have decided to forego looking (b/c I don't feel like getting that frustrated) and bring my own. Perhaps there is a photographer in your area that you like?

I was going to suggest the same thing as Kaydon.  Do you have wedding photographer friends in CA?  Perhaps the discount they would give you for being friends would make up enough that you could afford to set them up in a hotel for a couple of nights.

Have you thought about Cali photographers? I'm from L.A. and went through exactly the same thing as you. I just could not find a photographer in Vegas that i like! I think a vendor told me the wedding market in Vegas is fairly small. So I got frustrated and started looking for L.A. photographers. Soooooo many more choices there, and many of them do not charge travel fee to Vegas.

I think Studio ATG would be perfect for what you're looking for.

I also agree that we usually call out fake posters pretty quickly on this board. I'm not on as much as I used to be, so maybe there's one I missed, but I don't recall seeing any vendor-posing-as-bride posts in a while.

Actually, you aren't the first photographer to talk about the fake posts. i had a friend photographer point out after my wedding all the fake posts that I honestly believed were real brides...my cousin is also a photographer and said the same thing. With some being sensitive on the subject about their particular photographer, i've never brought it up.
myself, i used wedding wire as my photographer source. like the bride above, i used t0ner photography. i do know that she recently purchased new equipment as i noticed because i am a reporter at a newspaper. however, i am not a photographer and couldn't tell you specifics.
I also loved chelsea nicole. are there photographer publications you could refer to also for possible contacts?
i would also second the brides who suggest bringing your own photographer. then you could do studio photos/budoiur photos at home as well. as you mention a budget though, it may not be possible.

I suggest you bring in your own photographer.  Since this seems like photography is one of the most  important aspects for your wedding - you should bring someone who you trust.

The bridal session can be arranged in your hotel room or another location.  The boudoir session can be arranged before your wedding so you can give it as a gift to your husband on wedding day.  You could also do it post-marriage as an anniversary gift. (I know some brides like to give BD albums as a 1st yr anniversary gift - tradition of the gift being paper)

I will agree that there is a monopoly of photography at most chapels/hotels.  It is what it is.  But there's options.  Some simply do not allow outside photography, some allow only after the ceremony and others allow it at a fee (i.e. Caesars, Wynn, Artisan, maybe Bali Hai, etc)  So I think venue is important element too.

    BTW,
While I have not YET provided a review for all the wonderful Knotties on here...(sorry ladies) I did fly in my photographers.  I selected my ceremony location based solely on 1) an available outdoor ceremony area and; 2) permit my own photographers to photograph throughout the ceremony - before, during and after (for a nominal fee).  It was a wonderful experience.  I hope the photos will reflect how happy we both were (haven't received them yet).   I was married at the Artisan Hotel 1.5 wks ago.
