Calling People and Places

Today was my first major call-athon. I was so nervous! And I don't know why--it's ridiculous.

I left a message with the woman who I thought was in charge of the ceremony site (she's not anymore), and the woman who I want to cater the reception. Then I called this other woman who is a marriage commissioner (a 'JoP' here in Canada)... she was amazingly helpful and we chatted for almost an hour. She told me the ceremony site is no longer run by a community organization but by Parks Canada-- so now I get to deal with them.

Thankfully I've been emailing with the bookings guy for the reception location-- and we've basically booked it (we have to take a ferry to sign the contract, and I want to sign all other necessary contracts over there at the same time).

So now for some reason I still feel nervous. Anyone else nervous about calling folks for wedding stuff? Does it get easier???

I know it's silly, but I worry that they will say no or otherwise blow me off.

I think I'm stressing myself out a bit because I want to do as much as I can this summer, before my final year of school. I don't want to be trying to do a lot of wedding planning while focussing on my last few classes and student teaching. I just want everything to work out.

I can kind of understand. I really don't like speaking to strangers on the phone for some reason. I prefer to deal with people over email.

Cold calling is definitely not the easiest, trust me it is part of my job.

However, you have money and are willing to pay for a service. If they don't treat you respectfully on a basic new business call I don't think you want to deal with them.

Just relax though, it'll be fine!

If they say no or otherwise blow you off than you should be glad to know they're not the kind of people you want to work with. You're going to be PAYING them for a service, that makes you the boss!

Parks Canada is full of friendly knowledgeable people - no need to be nervous!  Their staff is AMAZING.  I understand being a little nervous making cold calls, but like Kat and Button said you're the boss here.

It's normal to feel uncomfortable talking to strangers on the phone if you don't do it that often. It just takes a little practice, after a while it won't seem so scary.

The workload your final year of school is pretty intense. You're smart for trying to get some things done ahead of time, but don't put too much pressure on yourself. Know yourself and your limits. If you're feeling stressed, give yourself a break.

Thanks ladies. Yesterday wasn't so bad-- I just really do prefer email to calling on the phone out of the blue. Also, most of the people we are hiring are indivduals (so I'm calling their home) or small community organizations.

Paige-- I just got an email from Parks Canada. And you are right-- super helpful! Plus, it will only cost $100 to have the ceremony outside at a beautiful lighthouse! :)
