I put up my tree today with a friend and we spent the afternoon drinking wine.  I think I need a nap now.  However, a little tree cheer for you.  (It's not done yet- still needs more lights and ornaments, but you get the point.  You can't see that our lights are little 'candles')

  • Yeah.. we didn't buy a topper last year, and the tree looked stupid without it, so I put the Santa hat on top.  Now I think the Santa hat should always be on top!
  • Cute tree. Ours is up, but hasn't been lit yet. Instead of a star or angel we found these two cute yarn birds as our topper. One is green and the other is purple and match the ornaments.

    I'm really looking forward to the Julboard (Christmas table) that we're going to in a few weeks.  It's all traditional foods.

    I also love Glogg.  I think the mulling process takes out some of the alcohol, right?  

    I'm trying to remember what my Swedish friend served at Christmas.  Her husband wouldn't eat pork or fish, so I think we just had some sort of beef roast, but I always loved the Glogg.

    Chicago has the Christkindlmarket going on right now through Christmas Eve.  H and I made it a yearly tradition to go down and get "das boot" filled with Glühwein (which I assume is the same as glögg?) and yummy German pastries.  It's pretty cool because 75% of the vendors come from Germany.

  • They're all pretty similar recipes. 

    Glogg:
    ngredients
    1.5 liter bottle inexpensive dry red wine
    1.5 liter bottle inexpensive American port
    750 ml bottle inexpensive brandy
    10 inches cinnamon stick
    15 cardamom seed pods or 1 teaspoon whole cardamom seeds
    2 dozen whole cloves
    1 orange peel, whole and washed
    1/2 cup dark raisins
    1 cup blanched almonds
    2 cups sugar
    Garnish with the peel of another orange

    Gluwhein:

    • 1 bottle of red wine. Use an inexpensive full bodied fruity wine. You definitely do not want to use an expensive bottle and try to avoid one with oak aging. I think a Gallo Ruby Cabernet would be ideal. Or a red Zinfandel or Syrah - Shiraz.

    • 2 - Cinnamon sticks – Cinnamon is very traditional. Break the sticks into pieces 1 – 2 inches each

    • 16 Whole Cloves – again a traditional ingredient

    • 1 Orange

    • 2 Tablespoons runny honey

    • 1 heaped teaspoon mixed ground Christmas cake spices – or equivalent amount of any of ground allspice, nutmeg, coriander mixed together

    • Water – wineglass full
