Moms and Maids

What to wear!!

I am the mother of the groom and the wedding is in the Northeast in May.  It will be held ouside in a park.  I'm contemplating  a tea length dress in a neutral or pastel color.  Maybe a pretty spring hat.  Maybe heels.  Most of the dresses in the bridal stores are floor length, chiffon and have jackets.  I'm looking for a bit more casual.  But should be "special" and pretty.  Any suggestions??  I live in Florida and have heard it may be still cool up north in the spring.  Thanks!!

Re: What to wear!!

  • Just shop at a department store. You will find your options a lot less limited!
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

I echo Addie's suggestion of shopping at department stores. There should be a great selection of dresses in the colors you mentioned this time of year (or soon). Also, here's another idea: my MIL found a lot of dresses that were actually classified as bridesmaids dresses that would have been totally appropriate. I think the one she bought was a bridesmaid dress, but I don't remember. There's really such a blurry line between the two.
  • If you shop at bridal salons (as I did), many of the dresses can be ordered in the length you want- knee length, tea length, or floor length. You also can choose from multiple colors. I found those things gave me many more options than department stores.
As for the weather here in May, it could be anything. It might be cool in the early part of the month, but by Memorial Day, it could be hot and humid. Hard to tell.
  • If you're into online shopping at all, Nordstrom's has tons of great choices, all free shipping and free returns...
  • Your outfit idea sounds great. Macy's just put out their Derby hats. They really have some lovely choices this year.

ETA: I'm a KY girl, so any pretty hat with a wide brim is a Derby hat to me. I'm not talking about actual wool felt derby :)

</div><div>My son had an outdoor ceremony.  I found it safer and "sturdier" to wear a metallic wedge versus a heel.  I would also echo the sentiments of others in terms of "off the rack" shopping.  Many department stores such as Nordstrom, Macy's, Bloomingdale's, Von Maur, and Lord and Taylor carry several dress designers with lots of options.  I found my dress as both the MOB and MOG at Nordstrom.  I found them online.  I ordered a few, selected the one I wanted,  and was able to return the ones I did not want --  hassle free!</div>
  • You never know about the weather in May in the NE. One week it could be up in the nineties and the next week, barely sixty. I second looking online and in department stores for a mother's dress. We are just starting to get them in now. The bridal stores mother's dresses are horrid and matronly.

[QUOTE]That will look lovely, and a very appropriate apparel choice. It may get cool in the evening, so bring a light evening wrap or cardigan.

<div>Yes.  I am looking for a dress with a wrap as well.  We had a wedding down here in Fl last weekend and the had baskets of blankets in the evening.!!</div>
