Food etiquette

I am having my Halloween wedding reception at a small family restaraunt, very few guests, maybe 15-20, and in order to keep food costs down, I was thinking about having an array of appetizers instead of a full meal, plus I will have cupcakes and other desserts. Is this ok?

  • At what time of day?

If it's at a normal meal-time (between 11am-2pm, or between 5pm-8pm), then please plan to feed your guests the equivalent of a meal. Heavy appetizers are fine, as long as there are enough to constitute a meal.

  • If it is indeed at a meal time, apps need to be heavy and equivalent to a meal.  That isn't always less expensive than a buffet or served meal.

  • If feeding 15-20 people a full meal is stretching your budget, then you have a few options:

    1.  Pick a different venue, or less expensive food at your current venue
    2.  Invite fewer people
    3.  Cut back on other extras (alcohol, favors, flowers/decorations, etc)
4  You can go the heavy-app route, but providing enough to equal a full meal may not save you money.

  • Only if it's being served at 2-5pm.  How do you know it's going to be cheaper?  Most of the restaurants I have been to, a few appetizers end up costing the same as a full meal.  Perhaps you can have a menu made with a few of the more affordable options for you guests to pick from so nobody picks out a $45 prime rib.

We did this for H's 50th bday party.  It worked out really well.

As for an apps/cake reception: you are correct - ours ended up costing almost as much PP as a dinner.  We had heavy apps that were enough for a dinner.  In retrospect I would have gone for the dinner or buffet that was offered.
