Barre Workouts in NYC

Hey Ladies,

I am 3 months out from my wedding and I was thinking of trying out one of the Barre Method workouts to build more muscle and get leaner before the wedding. Have any of you tried Physique 57, Pure Barre, Bar Method or Figure 4 at Pure Yoga?? Have you seen results?? Any particular studio you would recommend over the others??

Re: Barre Workouts in NYC

  • I have never been to these classes but I belong to Pure Yoga.  They are membership yoga studio, in other words, you need to prepare to join for a year.  And, figure4 is not included in the membership so it will be an extra cost.  The place is nice and the instructors there are excellent.
  • I belonged to Physique 57 for a couple of years and did the barre workout.  It will completely kick your ass and make grown men cry, so yes, I think it will work.  And their studio is very nice and modern, very comfortable.

Two drawbacks:  (1) the cost and cancellation policy are RIDICULOUS ($30-$35 per class, and unless your life is completely predictable and therefore you never have to cancel a class you've booked, you will start racking up the penalty fees),  (2) it's heavy on thigh work, and I actually started gaining inches in my thighs (all muscle, of course) to the point where my pants weren't fitting.  But that might not be a problem for you if what you want to tone up is what will show in the dress - waist, arms, etc.
  • I belong to Pure Yoga too and I've tried Figure 4. As PP mentioned, it's not included in the membership price. Personally, I didn't really like it, but that's coming from someone who was using the membership for vinyasa yoga, not bootcamp-type workouts (which is what Figure 4 seemed like, at least to me). I know there were quite a few men in the class and the women who did it looked toned...but I don't know to what extent that was a result of Figure 4 versus yoga, which also tones you up pretty fast (at least the hot power vinyasa classes do).

FWIW, my mom looooves Pure Barre. She does it in PA, though, so I can't recommend her studio!
