QOTD 1/9

Do you work in a cool place or a not so cool place (not taking into consideration the people, just the space)?

Re: QOTD 1/9

  • nope lame... a boring office park =(
  • We just moved to a new building so my desk and everything aroud me is new... I would say for the area I live in and the company I work for its super cooL! I love it! Compared to where the Google employees work its not so cool though haha!

  • Haha Chelsea that was the first thing that came to my mind too!  I wish I could work somewhere like that.  My work place is pretty good, there's lots of coffee and food places around and the neighborhood is pretty cool.  The office itself is good as well.
  • I think it's pretty cool to work in a high school.  Every day seems to bring a new adventure, it's very rare that I am bored.

  • No, our building is gross. It's super old and we have all sorts of water bugs - like roaches BUT THEY CAN FLY!!!!!!!! gross.

It's kind of ironic considering I work for a commercial real estate company.

    Oh well...haha

One of my friends just got a job at Google a few months ago and I saw her office.  I became super jealous very fast.  I don't think where I work will ever look like that.

Where I work is ok.  Some of the buildings are better than others.  The VA has a lot of sunlight coming in and they do a lot of food for meetings to encourage people to go.  The hospital isn't bad, it's your basic hospital office space and the rooms I do MRIs and such in are standard.  My office in the med school building is ok.  I like the space I have but I wish it was a little bigger.  Sometimes while I'm doing a study (mostly the neurochemical quantification part) things can get a little messy and tight on space when the postdoc is also doing stuff.

Kelsey we have bugs too!  In the med school someone does research on cockroaches and they get out ALL THE TIME.  I have seen some massive cockroaches that have escaped.

  • **ETA: If we're talking about location though, it really can't be beat. I'm 3 minutes from my house and we are so close to Cameron Village (like 1 minute) which is the best lifestyle/shopping center ever and we're only about 5 minutes from Downtown.
  • My office building is decent, but not nearly as nice as where I was working last year in Southern California. I wouldn't have a new job if I hadn't had to move for FI's new job. Grrr! The people at my new job are 85% better than the people I had to work with at my old job, so I think that makes up for it. Also, the city I work in is ranked the 9th most entertaining city in America by Forbes, so I guess it's not so bad.

  • I work in a research lab. Our space is pretty cool because it got updated about 3-4 years ago. We also are downstairs from a Starbucks which helps in the morning.  However, our old lab had a lot of windows in it and I completely miss that.

  • i working in Atlanta until I moved in with FI.  We had a million dollar lab and it was immaculate and modern and just clean.  The building I work in now is SO old, absolutely disgusting, and SO outdated.  I am happy to have a job in my field, but the lab is GROSS!

  • Reasons why my building rocks:
    1) The bus drops me off right in front of it.
    2) They give us cookies when we do fire drills.
    3) Free mints every Friday.
    4) Walking distance to Graeters, Skyline and tons of other awesome restaurants.
    5) Birds eye view of the square where tons of activities happen.

  • I have the worst office ever. Its in the basement of a nursing home. I never have any clue what is going on with the outside world. Its freezing cold always no matter what. My office is usually around 65 degrees.

My next job is in an office with lime green and orange walls. It's...bright. But the good part is every Thursday is Fun Day and each week has a different theme...Coronas and salsa/guac for Mexican, Prosecco and antipasta spread for Italian, etc. So 6pm rolls around and we all get to drink and eat at work.

  • The hospital I work at is pretty standard - the decorating is straight out of the 80s so we're hopefully suppose to be getting a remodel soon.  C just accepted a new job with an awesome office.  They have movies & a Wii for when people need breaks, plus the fanciest coffee/drink machine I've ever seen and a fridge with different local micro brews.  It makes me think I went into the wrong field!

  • I work in a pretty standard doctors office. We have two different departments. Pain management and anesthesia. I work in anesthesia so I am in a room with 3 other girls all day. We each have a corner. I like mine just because when I look up I can see out the window. Not that a parking lot is that great to look at, but we use to be in an office that didn't have any windows at all. So I will take what I can get.
  • Our building is old. Dirty. Nasty. LOL.

I work in a manufacturing facility and our office is in the middle of the shop. Although our was renovated a few years ago to make more space for office personnel, it wasn't upgraded to anything nice. Standard walls and office space.

Once we moved (only me and 5 guys in this office - 5 girls in the older office that was renovated pretty nicely), it took them 3 months for them to give me hot water and a new toilet seat in the ladies room near my office. I would have to walk through the shop up to the other offices because I was not using a bathroom with a toilet seat from the 60's or 70's and no hot water.

  • My job generally takes place on campus in the student services "building" which is actually just the top floor of the parking garage.  Overall it's a decent facility.  It's on a giant hill, and there are big picture windows on all sides that overlook all of Boston :)

Unfortunately, when I do appointments there, I only get to be in the tiny study rooms, which are kind of claustrophobic.  I'm allowed to meet students at the cafes and stuff all over campus (which is GORGEOUS!) but so far none of them have wanted to meet me anywhere else.

    Sounds like Palmetto Bugs!
  • Hmm...I work in a ton of different places!

Coaching: Three different pools, none of which are particularly cool. Loud, slippery decks, little natural light...

Lifeguarding: I guess these are both cool pools. One is a major sports centre with a 50m comp pool, two 25m warm-up pools, a dive tank, and a teach pool. The other is a private club with a brand new aquatics centre featuring two glass walls and a glass/retractable roof. It's like guarding at an outdoor pool when the roof is open!

Instructing: I love the university phys.ed. faculty, but there is nothing cool about the building or pools. Everything is pretty old, but not old enough to be pretty (no nice brick or stone, just concrete). Well, I guess there is the Butterdome--the pavilion/indoor track is enclosed in a big, bright yellow dome. Very distinctive. But I don't spend much time in that part.

Research: I get to do this wherever I want--usually at the kitchen table which means snacks are readily available, and my witty younger brother is often there to provide humorous distractions.
  • Nope. Just a regular hotel.

  • The only plus side to my office is I have a giant window.  The building is fairly new and so is all the furniture. But all the offices are separated by windows, and the guy's computer in the office next to mine, and my computer are back to back, so basically we look like we are staring at each other all day.  Kinda awkward at moments.  Other than that, it's pretty standard for a bank, I'd say.

  • It's interesting, I think. I work for a chemicals company that did bomb research back in the day, so it's built to withstand a bomb blast. My office is a boring cubicle, but I like that I have a really good size lab bench.

Yummmm!! Graeters sounds so good right now! That would be total motivation to go to work for me if I worked where you did.

I have technically 3 jobs, and they're all pretty "cool" places to work. I'm a substitute teacher, and I really like all of the schools in the district. I also work at my uncle's card store (like a Hallmark), and he's got a lot of home decor items that are so cute. I also work in the office of a cemetery. It's kind of creepy; I know. They've always been great about being flexible with my schedule (worked there on breaks from school and work there now on the weekends), and the office where I work used to be the caretaker's house and was built in the 1930's. I'm a history buff, so it's a neat place to work.

  • The building is pretty standard.  It is old with a few updates.  There is only 2 of us in the office so we get to rearrange however we want.  I have a pretty awesome computer with 2 screens.  the best feature is that it is in a great location just 3 blocks from home (but what isn't in a 4 by 4 block town??)  So I am able to walk to work everyday.  It saves a lot of gas money.  :)
