Couch to 5k Success?

hey girls! I've considered starting Couch to 5k today. I need to lose about 15 lbs and just get in better shape. I eat fairly well. I've been cutting down porportions as a baby step especially when it comes to fattier foods. But now it's time I got some exercise too. Has anyone had any success with Couch to 5k? Any advice?

Re: Couch to 5k Success?

  • Also, I'm trying to get my mom to join me, but she's not a fan of running. Is there a way to modify the program to do llike a walk/power walk routine?
  • I've never done it myself but some friends have. They loved it. Running will help in weight loss, along with lifting (if you don't do that already).

  • I haven't done C25K but my mom's friend lost around 60-70 lbs training for a marathon so I'm sure if you follow the program you can lose 15 lbs. But like all fitness programs it's only going to work if you stick to it.

  • I did couch to 5K a little over a year ago and have been running ever since.  I'm pretty sure there is another poster who is doing it right now (maybe lennon? I'm still learning names so I might be wrong!), so maybe they will chime in.

Don't be afraid of week 5, when you get there you'll be ready.  If you struggle with a week, you can always repeat it.  Also if you are planning to run a 5K at the end of the program, make sure you are running for distance instead of just running for time.

I recommend lifting as well if you aren't already doing it.

  • I'm pretty much running just to get fit and not really run a 5k so I think the time way will work out ok? I got the app for my iPod Touch so I can keep track of the times.

What kinds of things for lifting? I don't really have access to a gym right now, but I have some dumbells.
  • I did C25K over the winter when I wasn't feeling well and couldn't run like I usually can.  It worked really well for me.  I downloaded an app for my iphone that would tell me when to run and when to walk, so I didn't have to think about it.

I've been wanting to go back through it to work on speed, but it's so damn hot here right now.
  • I ran in like 90 degree weather. Was gulping water, but it was worth it! I also started a new blog to follow my journey (and keep me motivated.)

I did a C2 5K program a few years back and loved it (<a href="http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml" rel="nofollow">http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml</a>).  If you have access to a track- I went to the local high school- it worked really well for my mom and me.  My mom is not a runner at all, but we would go to the track together and she would alternate power walking with slower walking while I would jog/walk.  It was a nice way for us to work out together, each at our own pace.

Also, for easy weight lifting exercises, there are a lot you can do with just your body weight.  I do the basics: push-ups, full sit-ups/various crunches, squats, lunges, etc. I'm by no means a personal trainer, fitness is just a hobby of mine.

    Good luck!
  • I started running with the C25k Program. I got addicted I have since done a lot of endurance races. I think its a really wonderful program to start running, just make sure you get your gait analyzed and the propper shoes for your feet before you start running; this can be done at a running store. I wish you success and I hope you fall in love with the sport.

I fully second that!  It made a huge difference in my recovery after long runs.  Pixie- you already answered my question for you from my intro post <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-wink.gif" border="0" alt="Wink" title="Wink" />.  What kind of endurance races do you run?
