Opinions needed

So my FI and I have been throwing around color choices and ideas for the wedding and a snafu has been hit.  I think black BM dresses would be elegant and we could add a splash of our wedding color into them.  He says this would look like a funeral.  Any opinions out there that could help?

    My fiance really wanted black dresses and tuxes with red roses. But our wedding is in June... so I wasn't completely for that combo. We took the black to a charcoal gray and added pink for flowers and accents, which made it a bit more summery. Gray is a really nice alternative to black and goes well with a lot of accent colors. When is your wedding?

    My FI hated black and white (which I always wanted) so we muted it to charcoal gray and cream.  I agree with lindsay, charcoal gray is a nice alternative.

    charcoal grey is a fantastic alternative.  We didnt find any charcoal grey tuxes that looked nice, so the boys bought suits instead.

    If your wedding is in april, I could see black working with some nice bright flowers, but charcoal grey will look great too.

    Our colors are gray & yellow - but I am not putting my girls in yellow dresses as I think gray with pops of yellow will look better.  I love black for bridesmaids, but it all depends on what time of year and what time of day the wedding is.  I see black as more of a fall-winter or evening ceremony color.  But as the above posters put - charcole gray is a great option.

    I had not considered gray.  I think I'll throw that in to the mix of conversations the next time we bring up colors.  Our wedding isn't until April so a long ways away, but I'm finishing my masters right now and on top of that and work I figured doing everything little by little and slightly early I wouldn't stress myself out.   thanks for the opinions, very helpful, I'm excited to explore the possibility of gray.

    A friend of mine is getting married in June and is having black bm dresses.  She kept them cocktail length and they are adorable.  The best thing is that they are so cute the girls can definitely wear them again (no, really, they can wear them again, ha ha).  They bought cute short black dresses from Nordstroms and they ended up being around $80 each so all of the girls were very happy.  They are throwing color in with the flowers other accents.

    I have seen lots of weddings pics w/the bridesmaids in black and I think they look stunning. I think the pop of bright colors you can accent with would keep it bright and season appropriate. Everyone looks good in black and it makes it so much easier to match coordinating decor. I do love gray also. But if you have found black dresses that you and your maids love then go for it. I wouldn't think funeral at all! Try Googling some photos of real weddings w/black maids dresses to show him, maybe him seeing them done in real life will help?

    My wedding BM are wearing black.  My wedding is black, white, with touches of Tiffany Blue.  I have by Junior BM in Tiffany Blue.  Black and white is so clean and elegant.  It will not look like a funeral IF you keep your Mothers out of black, have the Father/Grandparents wear the accent color, and use a really fun accent color.  This color scheme works great anytime of year.

    My colors are black and champagne (and like the grey and yellow above, i wasn't going to put my girls in champagne dresses) so we went with black. Long, strapless, sweetheart neckline, and we're adding a sash of champagne, with a flower pin to add a pop of color. Black is flattering and you can mix it up anyway you want! 
    (Maybe take your FI with you to see the black dresses all sashed/flowered/spoofed up, and he might like them!).
