Printing guest on the outter envelope?

Is it wrong if I print "Ms. Jane Doe and Guest" on the outter envelope? Or should I just put Ms. Jane on the outside and include the guest on the inside only?

Thanks!

I always refer to what Ms. Martha says as each situation requires the most tact. I believe it should be addressed Ms. Jane Doe and then the reply should ask how many guests. Here's a link to Martha's site.

  • Don't use "and guest" anywhere on the envelopes.

Option One:  Ask Jane who she's bringing, and use Jane's name and the guest's NAME on the envelopes.

Option Two:  Address both envelopes to Jane, and include an insert note advising Jane that she can bring a guest if she prefers, and on the response card, she'll need to note the guest's name so you can prepare appropriate escort cards or poster or whatever at the reception venue.
  • For one, Martha isn't the premier when it comes to etiquette.  She likes to say she is, but she does MANY things incorrectly.  Just ask her former CT neighbors how "proper" she's been.  I love the ideas in her magazine but she's famous for doing what she wants, when she wants, and claiming "that's how it's done."

The best thing to do is call your friend to see if she wants to bring a date and get th name in advance.

The next best idea is to include an insert saying, "You are welcome to bring a guest.  Please indicate his name on the response card."

The third option is to write 'and guest' on the inner envelope.
  • IMO it is best to include the name.  Call her and ask if she will bring a guest and what his name will be.  I don't want people I don't know at my wedding...

  • It's best to get the name.
