Re: Wedding Counseling..

  • We started counseling in January and will finish June 9 th. Our church mandates that you attend a 6 month premarital course one Saturday a month before you will even be considered to be married by any of our Pastors. It really depends on your church, however if you are being married by an officiate I believe when and how you take classes is solely up to you.

  • We actually took a very different approach to the norm.  We attended a marriage seminar about 6 months before we got engaged.  [See  http://www.familylife.com/weekend].  Then, we worked with the pastor of my current church to undergo counseling that the pastor of the church where we will be getting married would accept.  It took us about 4 months to complete it (four, two to three hour sessions).  We finished that before we even set the date.

How was that marriage seminar with Family Life? I listen to the Family Life radio show a lot in the mornings and have always thought these seminars would be good.

We plan to start this Septembet for our August 2013 wedding. Our officiant requires at least 3 sessions but we want to get in double that. We really enjoy our officiant and feel that he could teach us a lot.

  • We started in April. We have one session a month until our wedding in Aug.

  • I liked Weekend to Remember.  It just so happened that the two couples teaching the seminar were in similar professions to me and my fiance.  I found that extremely helpful because sometimes you go to these seminars and the facilitators have been doing ministry all their lives and have never had jobs or education outside a church-related context.  We had educator/judge and engineer/writer couples for our class.  It is clearly geared toward married couples, but there are break out sessions for "pre-marrieds" only.  The sessions were good.  The course topics are well rounded, and it was nice to meet some different people.  We chose to go to a session offered in the southwestern US where we knew no one.  We ended up meeting some really nice people.  The sessions start and end on time and were reasonably priced.  While the attendees were not the most diverse group of people (racially), I thought the messages were universally applicable. Hope that helps!

FI told me to start planning the location 3 months before he proposed. Our engagement will be 2 yrs and 1 month. Six months into our engagement we started group premarital counseling with my church for 5 weeks and decided to do couple premartial counseling with a friend of mine in minstry for a personal experience for 4 more weeks. once we were done, we set a date in jan, i start planning in feb.

  • Our Wedding is August 2012 and we started in March. Our Pastor wants to do 6-8 sessions. We have 1 left.
  • I must be the oddball....  I had my first and only wedding counseling session yesterday.  FI's childhood pastor will be officiating our ceremony so he conducted the counseling.  I asked how many sessions we would need to attend and he said just one.  In his opinion we answered all of his questions correctly and seem to be the perfect couple.  In addition, Pastor has known FI and his family forever and feels they are a great family (which they are).  In my opinion, the pastor's age is catching up with him and he's tired.  So, I was just like ok, thank you Pastor.  I mean how do you argue with a pastor???  LOL  Now I can check marriage counseling off my list Laughing.

We started our sessions prior to being engaged.  I wanted to finish pre-marital couseling before we were engaged, but he proposed  about a month after we started on the same day he picked up the ring, because it was burning a hole in his pocket.  We completed about 7 sessions total.

Bonus: If you live in Texas, you receive a discount on the marriage license if you complete counseling with organizations that register with the state.  Check out www.twogetherintexas.com
  • We are seeing a marriage and family therapist for a personal feel. My pastor (who is my brother) will be marrying us and I would feel really awkward spilling my biz to him!!, LOL
