Good Father Daughter Dance Song?

So I'm looking for a song that I'm not going to cry over.  I really don't want to be bawling on the dance floor which for me could happen very quickly.  I want something that says, "I love you, I'm so happy, thank you for everything, let's party."  And I definatley don't want to do one of those cheesey dance "routines" that have been popping up everywhere where you're dancing to Butterfly Kisses and then all of a sudden, whoa!  What's that?  They're dancing to Ice Ice Baby??  This is wacky!

Thanks guys, any suggestions would be helpful.

Re: Good Father Daughter Dance Song?

  • Have you asked your dad?  I had been contemplating songs for a while before it occurred to me to ask my dad if he had any ideas -- and lo and behold, he had his heart set on something! ("Michelle" by The Beatles, which was really only appropriate to us since it was the song he named me for.)

  • Louis Armstrongs "What a wonderful World"
    Nat King Cole "Unforgetable"
Frank Sinatra "The way you look tonight"
    Beatles "In My life"

    Just google, you'll find plenty

And he was singing to me and talking about how he used to come into my nursery in the mornings when I was little and see my little face.  OMG, teary.  Seriously, though, it's a great song.

Also agree with PP about What a Wonderful World.  That's a great song.

  • I picked out "That's How Stong My Love Is" by OV Wright (my dad didn't really have an opinion about music). It's short, simple and not really a song to start bawling over which was what I was going for!

  • I have no clue and my dad doesn't want to pick.  I think I like the song at the end of KNocked Up, although it's pretty upbeat.
  • Billy Joel's Lullaby is a good one. My sister used that. My dad and I danced to "Walk With You" by Edwin McCain. It is sappy though.

I used Leon Redbone's "Dancing on Daddy's Shoes". It is upbeat and jazzy and cute, and my dad loved it.

Excellent choice! If we hadn't already found our first dance song, it would have been a serious contender!

OK I have tears in my eyes now....this is such a beautiful song

  • I also didn't want to get emotional on the dance floor....and I cry easily so this was a challenge for me.  My father also didn't want to get choked up since he isn't comfortable getting emotional in front of 200 people.  We decided to dance to The way you look tonight by Sinatra.  Also my dad isn't really very good at dancing and I needed something easy for him to dance to and not have to do anything too fancy.

    Awesome choice!

I would have loved that but that's my parent's song.....so that would have been strange.

Did anyone do a mother-daughter dance?  I did because my mom used to clean the house to the song Jump for My Love by the Pointer Sisters and she'd have me in the playpen and I'd jump and dance to the song.  So I specially requested to have that dance for her =)

Yes!  I loved it from the first time I heard it.  The only issue I have is what you said--it's really bouncy and I don't know how he'll do.  I'm going to see what he says.

I really liked it cause there's a line about the clothes/shoes she's wearing and that he (the dad ) bought them for her......which would be very true about our relationship since I was a shopper from toddler hood.

I have totally thought about this!  I remember the few short years that my parents were still married, my Dad would always put on ABBA records and my mom, sister and I would just spin around laughing....good times right there!

  • Haha, me too!  I love the part where he's like "Everything she sees, I see she wants/Everything she wants, I see she gets."  Such a cute play on words and so true for us too :P.

OBX, my mom really wanted a dance with me, but then I felt it was way too many formal dances.  I might surprise her with one later in the night and have everyone dance with their mothers or something like that.  I love Carrie Underwood's "Mama's Song" because it's form a daughter to her mom on her wedding day, but IDK.

I didn't want too many formal dances but the song I had the dance to with my mom we invited everyone to get up and dance.....but it was her and I dancing together.

I also had "Landslide" played so my parents could dance together.  Their 32 wedding anniversary was a few weeks after my wedding (and my wedding was on my father's Bday) so I wanted to highlight them as well.
  • Nates whyyyyy did you do that to me???  I have never heard that song before and I have tears running off my cheeks.....

  • H and I also used "Everywhere" by Fleetwood Mac as our recessional song :)  PERFECT beat for that.  It was awesome. I still get goosebumps when I hear that song.  I was so so happy. haha
  • Aww, that's so sweet, Aprove.  Yeah, I think my mom will love it and maybe if I do it towards the end of the night rahter than right at the beginning.  We're getting married on my parents' anniversay...except they're divorced :P.

OBX, isn't it so sweet?  I'm usually not a sappy song girl, but that one gets me.

Steph...."Everywhere" is such a great song!  Fleetwood Mac is just classic!

  • That "Daughter" song from Knocked Up was one of my contenders too :)

My dad and sisters and I share a love for Bob Seger.  As in - on road trips he'd put in a Bob CD and we'd all sing to it at the top of our lungs.

We danced to "Old Time Rock n' Roll."  I picked the song beforehand and didn't tell him about it - when it came on, he got this awesome grin on his face.  BEST THING EVAR.

OMG! I had to play that for my dad. It wasn't our father/daughter dance, but I had to have it because my dad always (and still does) blasted that song and would sing it when I was little. He was in his glory, pelvic thrusting..lol
