Getting in Shape

unmotivated...

how in the world can i stay motivated to loose weight.
i am constantly talking myself out of eating better or working out. olive garden or taco bell always seems to come first. meh.

Re: unmotivated...

  • LOL ME TOO IM TRYIN BUT CANT SEEM TO KEEP MY MIND ON IT!
  • Once you lose a little, the motivation starts to come naturally.  You see that smaller number on the scale, and start to find that losing weight is addicting.

Getting started is the hardest part.  Trust me, it gets easier.  I hope this helps!

    This.

ITA that it's hard to start. But what I found is that you get to this point where you really think about how disappointed you'll be if you DON'T meet your goals, and that it's time to be serious. No more excuses for Taco Bell.

Once you start, you won't want to screw it up.

  • Have you looked at the nutritional info for Olive Garden?

Because i've got to tell you that seeing 150 cals for one breadstick, and that my favorite meal was over 1000 calories.. really made it easy for me to resist.

    Also, Taco bell:

It's just a matter of one smart choice at a time.  I love Taco Bell too, and I still eat there a couple of times a month.  But now, instead of ordering nachos or a burrito, I'll have three fresco style tacos.  That's only 12 points under Weight Watchers!

I'm not a huge fan of Olive Garden, but I'm looking through their menu now and seeing smart choices there too -- especially on the lunch menu. If you find yourself craving Olive Garden, go for lunch instead of dinner and order either a grilled chicken dish with a vinaigrette or marina sauce (avoid creamy sauces like alfredo) or have a soup and salad.

This just made me hungry, instead of turning me off.  lol.
  • Really, for me it was the perfect storm of motivation.  I set up as many things that I thought would motivate me at the same time.

First, educate yourself about everything you eat, and what it means for your weight loss/gain.  There's this place that's so close to our apartment and I'd eat there when I felt lazy and didn't want to cook.  I checked out the nutrition at the start of my diet.  It was the last time that I ate there!  I just thought of all the running, all the times I didn't want to work out but I did... canceled out for one meal?  No thank you!  If I made a meal for something that I was craving, I was going to make it!  None of that fake meat, too salty, "it was okay but really greasy" stuff.  (I'll give you olive garden! haha, that $H#!'s just too good).

That brings me to the next motivator.  I started thinking of the "Diet" as a switch to super healthy (almost) make-me-live-to-150 foods.  I read a lot of stuff about what certain foods do to your body.  It was super easy to say no to those chips that I was craving when I thought of them as "make me bloat, make me break out, make me gain weight, spike my blood sugar then make me crash, non-nutritional flakes".

And the next motivator for me was my Fi.  We did the weight loss together.  It became something that we'd talk about every day.  We'd tell each other to workout.  We entered a weight loss competition together.  We cooked together.  I mean, it doesn't have to be your Fi, but someone you see a lot and talk to a lot who really wants to lose weight too.

Last motivator, the wedding, of course!  Looking great and having those pictures for life and showing those pictures to my kids one day.  Yes, and hearing my kids say, "wow mom, you looked great!"

So I'd say, put together a perfect storm for yourself!  Think of every little thing that could encourage you.  Really spend time educating yourself and reading about health, body, and food relationships.  Take baby steps too.  Start with a week of diet and 4 days of exercise, then reward yourself if you do it!  Shopping or spa or whatever.  The do two weeks.  Then a month.  Then 3 months.  **weigh yourself once at the beginning then only start weighing yourself after a month, once a week.  I found these things helped me.
  • Do you like to cook? I've found that the more time I spend in the kitchen (and the more issues of Cooking Light I read) the easier it is for me to want to eat healthy.
Also, you can make your own Olive Garden and Taco Bell at home (to an extent).  Okay so maybe it won't be quite as good but it usually does the trick as far as making the cravings go away. You can incorporate the key elements of these places (for me its cheese, lots of garlic, and salt) into your meals at home.  Don't be afraid to to make a not-so-healthy meal for yourself every once in a while.  It'll certainly be better than giving into your cravings.  I've found that the more I tell myself that I "can't" have something, the more it makes me upset and the more likely I am to give into the temptation.

  • this has all been so helpful!
    thank you all so much!

i've been slowly trying to eat better and ive been doing pretty good at it, my main problem before was id eat till i couldnt breathe and i would snack all the time. and ive cut out as much snacking, and i'm eating smaller portions. yesterday i went to taco bell and instead of getting two soft tacos and nacho supremes i got two chicken fresco tacos :)

i think ill be able to do it, the hardest part for me was getting bored with healthy food :(
