Went to the Derm Today

I've always suffered from acne and it's started to really act up again.  With 3 months until the wedding I'm hoping to see a difference in my break outs.

The Dr. prescribed me Clenia face wash (twice a day), Tazorac Cream (apply at night) and doxycycline (oral antibiotic twice a day).  Have any acne sufferers had good results with these meds?

Re: Went to the Derm Today

  • I went to the derm a few months ago since my breakouts were getting worse and I am on dorxy which I think is almost the same as what you are taking. It takes a good 4 to 6 weeks but there is a big improvement! I found it got worse before it got better, so dont worry if that happens! goodluck!
  • I've been on both doxy and tazorac. For me they worked MIRACLES.  In less than 30 days. Hopefully you have the same results!

With the doxy, make absolutely certain to drink an entire glass of water when you take it.  Preferably take it on a full stomach too.  It'll make you vom otherwise.

I'm so glad you had good results!  That gives me a lot of confidence, although I'm trying not to get my hopes up too much.  The Dr. did mention to keep the doxy in the kitchen and take it with food.  I'm going to follow her instructions to a T and see how it goes!

  • I've been changing my diet DRAMATICALLY for the past couple of months, and I must say, my skin has never looked better. I cut out greasy foods and sweets, and limit myself to about 2oz of meat per day (if any), and my acne has cleared up like it was never there. Juicing is a great way to clear up your skin. Drinking vegetable and fruit juice straight from the food itself (and not pre-packaged with added sugar) tastes great too. If you add this along with your facial creams and medicine, I'm sure you'll be cleared up in no time!
  • Hi,

I just wanted to jump in--Im sure what the dr gave you will help right now...However, as someone who's suffered from hormonal acne and still does at 30 yrs old, I will tell you the best thing I found (and ive searched far and wide and tried a LOT of products) is a good wash with glycolic acid in it---DDF (Doctor's Dermatologic Formula) 5% Glycolic Cleansing wash specifically. It is sold on their website, sephora's website, and in sephora's stores.  It has been an absolute lifesaver for me when nothing else has worked with salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, and derm visits! I switched recently to another facewash which was a big mistake and broke out like crazy--went back and now I'm healing again.  I don't know if it's the answer for everyone necessarily, but I want to share my experience! And I'm someone who gets cystic acne at times b/c I suffer from PCOS.
  • And like the poster above--planingweddingg stated, avoid processed foods and sugars as much as possible...Some say to even avoid dairy...Congrats to you Planing--were you following a specific diet or just cutting those foods out?! I just started the primal diet for skin and health reasons and hope it has a similar effect!

Exactly this! I have been taking doxy for almost two months now, and I have seen a drastic improvement. It took a few weeks to get used to (when I first started taking it, I felt nauseous), but now it doesn't bother me much. But definitely take it with lots of water and a full stomach. Also, do not take it within two hours of any dairy products, antacids, or zinc/magnesium/copper. All of those things reduce effectiveness when taken at the same time as doxy.

I second changing your diet, too, and incorporating lots of veggies. Another thing that has helped curb breakouts for me is making a concious effort to keep my hands away from my face! I have a habit of rubbing my chin when I'm sitting idle or thinking hard about something, and since I became aware of it, I have been trying so hard to stop, and I think it's making a difference.

Thanks for all the advice!  It's good to know that I'm not alone when it comes to suffering from breakouts.  I recently started making the Green Monster smoothie, I have one of them for breakfast everyday so I'm getting lots of fruits/vegetables.  I used to drink lots of soft drinks (Dr. Pepper was my drink of  choice) but I haven't had a soft drink in probably 2-3 years and I could tell a difference in my skin after I stopped drinking them.  Now I drink green tea instead.  I still need to do better with cutting out other sweets and fatty meats though.  I've been trying to incorporate more fish into my diet lately.  I'm hopeful all these changes will be beneficial and I'll see results by my wedding in September!

  • I work at a dermatology office and we have a lot of patients on those med combos and it seems to help them a lot. Good luck :)
