Wedding Invitations & Paper

Wording the time, is this confusing?

We are trying to avoid using the number 4 on the invites.
Is this confusing?
"Half before five o'clock in the afternoon"

Re: Wording the time, is this confusing?

  • if you're trying to avoid the number four because it's bad luck in chinese culture, why are you getting married at 4:30 then? seems kinda strange.
  • That's interesting and an interesting fact.  But, in the US, "half-before five" doesn't exist in our normal lexicon, so that would ULTRA confusing for people.  I would assume that you made a mistake on the invitation and meant half-after five in the evening.

How about changing your wedding time to 5 o'clock.  That would solve the issue, right?

The wedding is at 2:30, actually (the :30 is a whole other thing, heh), but by the time it's done and people head over to the reception hall, we wind up in the dangerous "4pm" zone.
  • Do you need people to know what time the reception is starting, or can it start whenever they get there after the ceremony is over?  For the latter you could just put "reception immediately following" and not put a time.

We debated that for a while, the consensus was to put some kind of time down, as it would really help our guests.  We also looked at simply moving the times around, but wound up either with a shortened reception or a rushed morning.
  • instead of the number 4 couldnt you just spell out the word four or vice versa...whichever is the unlcuky charm use the other?? Seems like an easy solution...otherwise put 5 and people will be late...but half before 5 seems silly and will cheapen your invitations

  • Could you say something like "Reception xx minutes after the conclusion of the ceremony" or "Please join us at the reception prior to the newlywed's arrival at 5pm"?  Not the best but still thinking this one out......
  • Yeah, the four thing is major bad luck in Asian cultures.  Every hotel we went to in Vegas skipped the floor numbers which contained a four.

I'm not sure how putting a time down would be really helpful to your guests.  Do you have a gap?  Are you thinking that guests may be going somewhere else in between?  It seems like "Reception immediately following" would be so much easier...
This is a neglected planning bio.
This is a belated married bio, with no reviews yet because I'm lazy.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
