Brows

I am thinking about getting my brows waxed soon. I have never done it before and I was wondering if some other brides had any advice on the experiance. What to expect type stuff.  Thank you in advance.

Re: Brows

  • i get it done all the time - i am a pale pinkish skin tone - so i tend to be reddish or pink for about 24- 36 hours after....
i do bring a picture of the brow shape i want with me - everyone's idea of a nice clean arched brow can vary - and in the past I have been too thin or not gotten any shaping
    hope this helps a little

  • My MUA told me that a lot of the Asian salons are not licensed to wax brows, which is why a lot of them don't advertise it, but still do it. Some ULTAs have the Benefit Brow Bar where they talk with you about what shape you want, and actually draw with white pencil in the areas to be waxed. You must sign off before they wax. Seems a lot safer to me! I will be going to check them out this weekend, so I'll let you know how it goes.

  • I much prefer plucking my eyebrows - I feel a lot more in control and don't have to worry about my eyebrown accidentally getting completely taken off...but I'm probably just overly paranoid.

How far out are you from your wedding? I don't know if I'd recommend doing something this new for you too close to your wedding.

  • If you go to a reputable salon, you should be fine. HOWEVER, some people tend to break out a bit 3-4 days after waxing, so time it accordingly. Waxing is quick, easy and only hurts for a few seconds. I HIGHLY recommend it over plucking.

Usually, the aesthetician will clean your skin/brows and discuss the arch you want. They then apply the wax to a small area, put the strip (which is usually a thick, paper-y fabric called Pellon or sometimes muslin), rub it to adhere and then pull the strip off along with the unwanted hair. Usually it takes four or five 'pulls' on each eyebrow. It stings a bit but nothing horrible.

They clean up any excess wax with an oily cleaner, then usually do witch hazel or some other gentle astringent to clean up the oil and soothe the skin. Some people get really red, but it usually subsides after a day or two. If you are really red or unusually sore, ice helps.

If your wedding is Sept. 1, I'd do it here in the next week to 10 daya. If there are strays, they can clean those up a week before or so.

  • I've been getting my eyebrows threaded for the past few years and love it! It's relatively cheap 15 after tip and I've never been unhappy with the results. Ive gotten them waxed before too but have been happiest with threading. It does hurt a bit the first few times but it no longer bothers me. Occasionally I break out afterwards but it's typically not an issue.
  • I would recommend getting them threaded at a reputable salon. A good salon will give you a complete run down of everything to expect, dos and donts, etc. If you are prone to ingrown hairs, keep that in mind, as waxing and threading increase this (in my experience).

  • Seconding the threading votes.  I have friends who suffered hot wax burns even at reputable salons.  Accidents happen.  (I also get mine threaded because I have super-sensitive skin- wax leaves my eyebrows red and puffy for at least 12 hours and sometimes a whole day; with threading the redness usually fades with half an hour.)  I tend to break out 3-4 days after either waxing or threading, but breakouts are much less severe with threading.
  • I would recommend the benefit brow bar. Mine is in a Macys. I had mine waxed at a nail salon, but they more cleaned it up, not really shaped. The brow bar had me grow them in for three months and they just cleaned it up during that time and then once they grew in they reshaped them. THey look so good now!
