Ideas for wedding entertainment

Hi,

My fiance and I are getting married June 22, 2013. We have been to several weddings where they had photo booths. They are fun but i feel like they have become super trendy. We want to do something different without making it feel like a kids party (like magicians etc). What are some different ideas for entertainment? We thought about a caraicature artist but since we have approx 190 guests, it wasn't enough time to ensure the majority of people got a drawing. Our budget is no more than $500.  Let me know, thanks!

A good DJ or a band is enough entertainment. Adults don't need constant entertainment.  They will mingle, socialize, dance and eat.  That's plenty.
  • We have a DJ but we still want a little something extra to make it that much more fun.  Or at least for the kids too

<div>Agreed! Invest in a live band or, if its more your style, an awesome DJ. No additional entertainment is needed for adults to enjoy themselves. </div><div>
</div><div>I also considered a photobooth at first, but have since scratched the idea. IMO, they are too trendy and expensive. Plus, I wanted an old black and white photobooth that printed the classic four-image strips... but couldn't find one, all that is available are those modern computerized booths with colors and backdrops and props. Totally not my style. Instead I booked a fantastic band to perform all night and I'm confident that will be the best part of the party. </div>

As an adult, I don't need to be entertained. Good food, drink, music, and company is awesome enough.

Heck if I'd spend $500 on "something" to entertain kids.

Slightly off topic, but when I was a kid going with my parents to "adult" things like weddings, my mom always made sure I had my own quiet games or toys along to entertain myself. Do parents today not do this anymore? (I'm not yet a parent...so I'm not sure...)
  • im a parent and i made sure my kid had stuff :)
  • I agree with what you all are saying. Growing up was the same for me, I didn't have things to entertain me and my brothers at weddings. We sat there and dealt with it haha.

So it seems no one has any good suggestions except go with what I have. A Dj. What happened to that extra pizzaz!? lol
  • Super ironic timing! My fiance just spoke with this guy that plays live music that we love to go watch and he is free the night of our wedding, however, we already booked the DJ. We want the DJ to MC the event and play the "club hits" and the live musician to play during/after dinner.. whats the best way to have two of them? Cocktail hour have the DJ since he isnt seen but only playing music through the speaker into the reception area, and then after dinner have the musician play for a few hours and before the event is over, go back to the DJ for more club hits? Does that sound weird?!

We had the DJ play "background" music during cocktail hour. Then, we had a mariachi band play during dinner for about an hour.  Then, the DJ came back on for dancing and partying.
  • I have heard of cigar rolling where you hire someone to come in and hand roll cigars for your guests.  If you have an outdoor area, they can go outside and smoke them.  This is not everyone's style and I have NO idea how much this costs, but it's an idea.

[QUOTE]Maybe DJ for cocktail hour, and first dances, then live music for dinner and some dancing, then DJ for club dancing a bit later?

Yep thats what we are thinking!
  • I love live bands. I think they add such a sweet, romantic touch to the evening. That being said, we rarely ever dance to them. Our generation usually ends up leaving fairly early...

I would do the live band during cocktail hour, dinner, and first dances. Then switch over.
I like the idea of the livce band while poeple are mingling and getting settled. Maybe playing more oldies that some of the older guests can enjoy.
  • My fiance and I are having an art station. We're going to provide plain white mugs, plates, and fabric squares, along with fabric paints and sharpies. We're hoping people will decorate the mugs and plates for us, and that we can use the fabric squares to make a wedding quilt.

It's a really inexpensive but fun project. With the mugs and plates, after they are sharpied, all we will have to do is bake them in the oven for about 10 minutes and the markings will stay on.
