Ushers and Groomsmen??

I am confused! What is the difference between an usher and a groomsman? Can they be the same? I know an usher is supposed to help people to their seats, hand out programs, etc...but can a groomsman be an usher? Also, who sets up the church before the ceremony?

    we're having our groomsmen help seat guests instead of having separate ushers. FWIW, I've never seen people in NY do separate ushers but people on this site seem to do that quite often. I almost feel like its asking people that aren't "special enough" to be groomsmen to be put to work at your wedding. I think its especially rude when people make ushers shell out cash to rent matching tuxes. Just sayin'.

    My church recommended having at least two ushers so that they can prevent late arriving guests from walking in during the middle of the procession.  Groomsmen wouldn't be able to help with that because they are either up at the front of the church or taking part in the procession at the time.

    So how do you choose 2 people to miss out on part of the ceremony? This seems silly to me, I've never seen people who came late to a wedding barging in during the procession, usually people who are late have the sense to slip in quietly when the attention is directed towards the front.

    I work as a church organist, so I've been part of more weddings than most people see in a lifetime.

    I assure you that I have NEVER, EVER, EVER seen a late arriving guest jump into the line of BMs to get to their seat.  There are a lot of clueless people, but I'm hard pressed to imagine anyone, anywhere, ever, "cut" into the processional.  That's just silly.

    Every wedding I've played, as well as my own wedding, and my two childrens' weddings had the GM double as ushers.    It works just fine.

    We had separate ushers.  It was a way to involve my teenage cousins in the ceremony.  They handed out programs and then escorted the mothers to their seats.  Then they sat down while we began the processional.  It makes perfect sense to have GM do this, though.

    The church will be set up by the people that work at the church, the people you hire to decorate it, or by you.  Your WP are not staff.

    To plainly answer your original question:

    An usher's job is to greet guests. They usually pass out programs and help people find their seats.
    Groomsmen are the groom's attendants, the male equivilent of bridesmaids.
    In some cases they will perform some usher duties.

    Set up depends on your venue. Some will set up for you, some will do nothing. I"d check with your venue and get specifics. If it does not come with set up, it is not unusial for the groomsmen & ushers  to help set up.
