to Tip or not to Tip?

Who do you tip? I've heard so many different things from different people. Who should get a tip?
hair & Make up artist, florist, photographer, DJ, Our venue has a Manager who runs the wedding, baker? If they get a tip how much? Thanks..

Re: to Tip or not to Tip?

  • It's in the FAQ, but my thoughts:  I get annoyed at the tipping thing, but I don't think you tip the photographer, florist, DJ or venue, especially if the venue adds in a gratuity charge, which most do.  I usually tip hair, but not sure why.  Anyone who charges for services shouldn't expect a tip.  It should be optional for all services.  Tipping or thanking (cards) for anyone who goes above and beyond is fine, but I think too many vendors expect it and don't even give top-notch service.

  • General rule of thumb is business owners don't get tipped, employees do.  Also, check contracts - if a gratuity is built in, there's no need to tip.

My own personal rule of thumb is that I tip anyone I want to.
  • To hijack this thread a bit (Sorry OP! hope this is helpful to you, too!)... How much do you tip the venue manager? SHe is the event coordinator, so therefore an employee?

Gratiuty is built-in to our bill, but I belive that's just for servers.

<div>I agree with this sooooo much! Service is going down and yet people expect better tips... why?</div><div>
</div><div>I think that if you do get service that you enjoyed, then why not tip? It's a nice way to show your appreciation. However, I would only tip once the contract has been well completed.</div><div>
</div><div>For example, I wouldn't tip the photographer right after the wedding, rather, when I got the pictures from him (on time) and liked the quality of the work. That way I could make sure the tip was appropriate (if he did a truly amazing job, he'd get quite the tip from me!). </div><div>
</div><div>I'd say do whatever you feel, tip those who provide the service(s) that you enjoyed!</div>

  • My husband drives a limo, and even though they advertise that part of his fee is 'gratuity', in reality it is his income, not a tip. If they were to take that off his hourly pay, it would fall to far less than we could live on. So it is a kindness to tip a limo driver, just as it is to tip any service professional!
