let's talk alterations: Martha Shump vs. DB

I got my dress from DB and the woman who worked with me that day was talking about alterations and when I should come back for them, etc.  She said the hem and the bustle probably wouldn't cost more than $150. However, she is NOT the seamstress, so I don't consider that an actual quote because she really doesn't know.  Since then, I've been hearing lots of horror stories about getting alterations done at DB so I'm a little nervous.

I've also heard lots of Great things about Martha Shump.

Hears my issue:  Can I go to these places with my dress and just get a Quote on alterations???

If I go to DB, I can add the cost of alterations to my credit account that I'm paying my dress off with.

But if I go somewhere else, I will have to pay in full.  (but if it's cheaper than DB it would make more sense)...

AHHH.  Can anyone help??

Yup, you should be able to get quotes from the places.  I know I got quotes from a bunch of alterations shops as well as DB before I found the place to do my dress.

i went to martha shump and you only put a deposit down on the first meeting you go. and she was very reasonable as she had to completely reconstruct my entire dress because it was not made correctly by the designer and i think my alterations were only 280 or something. so i thought she was very very reasonable and knows what she is doing for sure.

I agree with Griffin.  Martha has altered two dresses for me, and her prices are cheap!  Definitely cheaper than DB.

From what I have heard, Martha is very reasonable and does great work. I would go with her. I am taking me dress to her but haven't made the appt. yet.

I just picked my dress up from Martha on Monday. She did an amazing job. It was 200 for her to hem it, bustle it (french), take in the top, and partially reconstruct the top because of a flaw in the dress. She also steamed my dress and my veil, and added a running stitch to the top in order to prevent the gap from my chest.  Make sure you make your appointment well in advance because she does book up quickly.

Yeah, if you can take it elsewhere besides DB, you'll save a ton. I took mine (and several others did also) to European Touch. Not only was it done quickly, but it was less than $80 for the bustle, bra insert, and a couple of other minor things. They've been in business forever and even altered my grandmothers' clothes. Totally worth looking into.

Could you email me (if "Jaytee" isn't triggering any memory) at jtlenis501@ yahoo? :)

    I hope you're well!
