I'm going to jump on the Mica train. I felt like after someone pointed out how bad the other Mica sucked, she way over tried to prove that she didn't suck. All of the OMG DID YOU HATE ME comments to people were a little over the top. It's cool, we get the other Mica sucks, but don't fall into the suck category from over kill of I DON'T SUCK. I'm pretty sure I overused the word suck, but I'm childish and it made me giggle a little.
And Star, none - to my knowledge - of our jobs entail the safety and welfare and education of children. Hers does. BIG difference. My grievance is with the people in shaydenise's thread yesterday. I was unable to be on to comment in it yesterday, but I've got several issues with it. I'm tired of the BSA bashing. First, the story is quoted from a biased source (as are a vast majority of news stories, particularly about the Scouts). Second, the father wasn't trying to be a leader, he wanted to wear the uniform as popcorn chairman. The uniform is for registered members only, which he is not. And yes, he can't be, because of his beliefs. Shay, your interjection about your friend in medical school was out of place given Pat's (yes I know him) comment - there's nothing in there about damn career choices. It is not a commentary on individuals; the BSA has chosen what they believe provides the best role models for young adult males growing up. And, by the way - the National office is held to this standard as well. Are there going to be exceptions out there? Probably. But this is what they've decided. They don't teach the boys that gays are "bad people," that's a fallacy. As was said, they are a private organization, and they have the right to make their own membership rules, just like GSUSA, sororities, fraternities, etc. It's been upheld in the Supreme Court. kcullen, they are moving out of many public buildings, but many of them have long-standing agreements. And Mica, I think I'm going to stand by my original assessment of you.
    Posted by missy68
Long standing agreements or not, it's a violation of law in most states and they need to move to a private building where tax dollars aren't being used towards their private organization.

How to you feel about a life long Scout getting the boot as an adult because he's gay/atheist? If their policy was you had to be Christian to be a good role model would it bode well with you for them to kick out or prevent Jews from joining? What if only white men were deemed appropriate role models?

Again, they're within their legal right to operate as they see fit, but I don't have to support it.

Re: extensions. Yes, here where I am it's not uncommon for people to pay $1000 for the glued-in type extensions. Also it's expensive to get hair permanently straightened the Japanese way. My sister did extensions and the total was about $1000. I thought she was nuts. I'd rather spend $1000 in so many other ways.

The Jewish population is well represented in Scouting, as is LDS, Catholicism, etc. The BSA is NOT a Christian organization, it is a religious organization. Their pledge is to God, not Jesus. Muslims can be Boy Scouts. Way too many people misconstrue the mission of the BSA.

It shouldn't come as a surprise to the Scout. I would feel for him personally, but he grew up knowing the rules.

I never said you did have to support it.

I didn't say other religions weren't represented, I'm fully aware that BSA isn't a Christian organization. I asked how would you feel if the Scout's policy was you had to be a white Christian straight male to be a good role model? And model Scout who grew up knowing the rules gets the boot b/c he's gay/atheist as an adult but still holds onto the values of the BSA sits well with you? I'm not asking you to pity him, but to think about how this scenario speaks of the organization.
In Response to Re: Air Your Grievances! : It's a moot point, because that isn't the policy and never has been the policy. And to the second point, I've answered what I can answer, for a multitude of reasons. And I'll ask you, if you (which I believe) are born gay, why would you join an organization or continue in an organization that will exclude you? We will have to agree to disagree on this.

My point is I'm sure IF that were a policy few people would find it acceptable because it's not socially acceptable to be biased against people based on their religion or race. However it is considered socially acceptable to be biased against homosexuals and atheists - therein lies the problem I have.

And do you really think people are sexually aware as children (which is when they would join the BSA)?? It can take many years to come to terms with being gay, mostly because of the stigma society has placed on it. So little boys who are cub scouts don't know they're gay yet, boy scouts probably don't know it yet, and some eagle scouts may not know it or have come to terms with it yet either. So this young man is basically cast aside because of who he realizes he has always been and it's fuucked. This action by the BSA kinda of negates any good they do in my mind, sorry.

And that's all I have to say about thaaat.
