Buying BM's dresses from places other than bridal boutiques

Has anyone bought dresses that are at the bridal boutiques, for cheaper somewhere else? Websites?

I see most websites do not allow returns. How about places like www.shopforbridal.com?

Any thoughts? All my girls except 2 are still in college, one is in vet school and has some loans to pay back :-/

I like Dessy's dresses, are they a practical price? (Less than $160...)

Thanks!

Re: Buying BM's dresses from places other than bridal boutiques

  • I'm planning to use dresses from The Limited for my BMs.  I've been checking sites that have brick-and-mortar stores for awhile now (Ann Taylor, J. Crew, WhiteHouseBlackMarket, etc.) and "stumbled" across the perfect dress (Addison in Ink Blue) for under $90!  Sites that have actual store locations tend to have friendlier return policies.  Since not all styles are available in-store, my BMs can try on another style dress in a store near their homes to determine their size for The Limited's line--a lot better option than just picking a size based on measurements from a size chart, I think.

You might want to try some of these stores, as they can be surprisingly more affordable than bridal shops, may exceed bridal shop quality, and some of the styles are more plausible for actually wearing again.  Best wishes!

  • I used newyorkdress.com
I dont know about their return policy, but i dont plan to return my BM dresses

You cant try them on which can also be tough but they have a great selection
  • Department stores.... Victoria secret has cute dresses too.... don't let the name fool you.
  • we found our BM dresses at Nordstrom.  pics in bio.
  • Found the perfect ones that they agreed on at JCPenny!  They are perfect and just need a little tailoring.  I sent both my maids a pic of the dress, and they loved it.  Then I told them where to get it.  They were happy about the price. (on sale too) and Shocked!  (neither would shop at pennys')

    Worked out great.
  • Target has a bridesmaids section now.

  • My girls found dresses at J.Crew. They have a ton of dresses on sale and even thought the sale pages say "no returns or exchanges", if you talk with a wedding specialist they'll dismiss that rule!
  • Thanks ladies, I've been looking almost everywhere you mentioned for awhile....can't seem to find things I like. I see some at Dillards and Younkers, but the dresses seem wayyy too short. I'm kind of upset with J.Crew because they do not have an orange color, or marigold color this season. I've received all of their greens, but I'm not in love with any of them :-( I think I'm just too picky on the color of the dress....uggh
  • Amberkae, what shade of orange is it?

    Are you wanting knee length?

I'll start looking if you'll give me some ideas.

  • Wrkn925, I had this Jim Hjelm picked out: http://www.jlmcouture.com/Jim-Hjelm-Occasions/Bridesmaid/Spring/2011/Style-5114

After I realized it was $230 at the bridal shoppe, we put it back lol. I've kind of strayed away from orange because I'm having a hard time finding the right orange. I am looking for knee length dresses.

I'm searching for green dresses like this color: http://weddings.theknot.com/Real-Weddings/59096/detailview.aspx?type=3&id=59096

This next month I need to really get out and look! I'm having my sister check out some I found at Dillards :-)

That's awesome bree4305! What kind of dress/color did ya find at Maurices?!
  • That is awesome! I hope I can find a deal like that :-)

I acutally am in love with the gray and yellow palette idea. Have a girl in my wedding party where the yellow would wear her lol. Thinking I may do gray dresses myself, as any bright color would fade her out :-( What were your colors with the gray dresses?
  • Macy's $70- long, but cheap enough to shorten?? CLICKY

Macy's $90- prob too light green, though. CLICKY

    I'll keep looking.

  • Thanks for doing some searching for me, I really like the orange dress. However, I have a bridesmaid with very large boobs, and a sweethart line is probably out lol. I'm trying to find dresses that can support her chest. I like the style of the green dress, but yes it is too light. I'm not much of a pastel colored person :-p
