Update: First Week at Work (sort of long)

I finished my first week of work as an adoption counselor! I like this job a lot. I can tell because I had to work a few extra hours this week, and I did not even mind. I like almost everyone I work with, and my supervisor is a really nice guy. He's very funny and down-to-earth. The management here is such a welcomed change compared to the job I had before I moved.

Basically, I help people pick which animal is right for them. I ask them which characteristics they're looking for, and I suggest a pet in our database that is similar. Then I get to bring the animal to the visiting room, where they can play with them. If they like them, I process the adoption. They're also going to teach me how to administer certain vaccinations and microchips, so I can help when the clinic is really overwhelmed.  I'm really excited that I'll get to learn something new that is also very practical.

The job does have a few negative points, but they're really small in the grand scheme of things. The biggest negative is the crazy customers that sometimes come in, but this is nothing new. I've been dealing with crazy customers for years now. I've also become mildly afraid of puppies. People always ask to meet with them, and there are approximately four pups in a cage. When I reach in to get one, I have all of those excited guys jumping and biting at me. I'm convinced they'll take me down one day LOL.

How is everyone else doing out there? I know there were quite a few NEYs who were looking for new jobs or had just started new jobs.

Did you end up getting the job at the first place or second? Just wondering, since the first is having a pretty insane week... I wanted to drive over and take 8 animals home with me just to get them in the AC!

First. It definitely was insane, but we really have a good staff. Everyone just jumped into action. We did a lot of adoptions, so now we can save more!

Oddly enough, the second place called me today to set up an interview for a part time position. I could potentially be spending all of my waking hours surrounded by animals. I would be okay with that. :)

I really loved this guy. He was such a well-behaved dog and super friendly. He was adopted several days ago.

I started my new job today! It's at the same company, doing almost the same thing but instead of being on the phones with clients I'm replying to clients' e-mails. I was too stressed out with my old job, getting yelled at all the time. In an e-mail someone can type in all caps and "yell" but they're not really yelling at you. The new job also means more pay, plus right now I could do a lot of overtime, so even more pay. I did mostly training today, learning the format for our e-mails and how to store them in the clients' files and what not, but it was pretty easy, and the person training me was surprised at how fast I caught on. Laughing

I hear ya, Tdwpg! I spent a lot of time at my old job listening to customers calling to complain. Most of it was on account of their own error, for things like missing deadlines and whatnot, but it didn't stop them from yelling. I would not have minded in the least if I had been switched to answering emails. Congrats on the new, less stressful job!

Yep, it is so often their own screw ups, or at least not our screw ups. One client called us on Saturday and called my supervisor and f***ing C U Next Tuesday because the bank didn't put the stop payment on the payment we were supposed to take out, and she got 2 NSF fees because of it. She never said anything to us about it, and had she called we may have been able to make some sort of arrangement. It was really her bank that didn't do their job....
