~Opal~

Opal, got a quick question for you. Why are nuclear cooling towers hyperboloids?

That shape is the most efficient at rejecting heat to the atmosphere, while still being easy to construct. It has a lot of surface area per unit volume.

Random fact: most of the hyperbolic cooling towers you see actually don't belong to nuclear plants. Coal, oil, and gas plants all need to cool down their water too!
  • That makes sense. Thanks! We are working on conic sections, and the inevitable question of "where is this used?" came up. I didn't know why they are normally that shape, so I learned something today.  Awesome!
  • Glad I could help!
  • Look at you, bein' all smarty pants.  :D

  • Why yes, my pants are quite smart today.
  • Hey, I know who the geniuses are around here. I go straight to the top with my questions.
  • I'd just take pants that fit, regardless of how smart they are.

  • My project for the next few days involves calculating the capacity of radial sections in a cooling tower for a nuclear plant in Arizona.

    YAY FOR NERDS!!
  • Oh, that must be Palo Verde. Neat.
  • Ooh, integral calculus, right Matt's?

Yup, that's what it says at the bottom of my drawings.  Did I ever tell you I spent three months working at INL (Idaho) a few years ago?  We do a lot of nuclear work in my office.

Sara - no calculus, just the concrete manual.

    Nah - I love calculus.  I haven't done it in a while though.  <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-cry.gif" border="0" alt="Cry" title="Cry" />

ETA:  If it makes you feel better, I had to google hyperboloids to see what you were talking about.  My cooling tower today is just a cylinder.
  • Okay, how lame am I that it does make me feel better?Embarassed
