Catering Question!!!

So I was thinking of Catering my own cocktail hour and reception, but I'm having seconds thoughts because I'd like to relax. My future MIL offered to cook and my mother used to own her own restaurant and catered my aunt's wedding and she had 300 guest so I know she can do it but I don't want them tired and stressing over everything. What do you guys think? Is it worth it? Oh another idea I had was to buy all the food needed and have a caterer just cook and prepare everything to cut the cost but I'm not sure if that can be done. If anyone knows and cateres in NYC that would do this please let me know. I'm having about 150 guest and I would like an inexpensive caterer please. Thanx!!

HMM well it seems you have to decide between letting your family relax or helping out with the MAIN portion of your big day. I would say ( and I believe a lot of knotties may agree) let your family relax find a caterer who will buy, cook, and deliver/set up the food in your budget. There are some out there. I know, New York, Like L.A. is a HUGE city with plenty of catering options. I would say let your family relax and keep searching for a catering company.

I second ksk2012. Let your family relax. My parents wanted to cater our wedding and then hand over the last minute detalis to family friends but we've decided against it. However, my mom bought the ingredients for the vegetairan entre and is having a family friend prepare it. Our caterer is onboard with this and have reduced the price significantly for vegetartarians (just over 1/3 of our guests are vegetarians). Find a caterer in your budget and ask if  they'll be willing to work with you. We were able to cut costs even though we customized our menu.

I went to a wedding last year where the family members catered and extended family members of the bride missed the ceremony because they were busy in the kitchen and then at the reception, the bride's mom was helping serve the food. Just something to think about.

Let your family RELAX, your wedding should be a joyous occasion.  Keep looking around town for a caterer, I'm sure something inexpensive will turn up.  Does your venue cater weddings?

I ditto let the family and you relax. If you have a membership to Costco or one of those places you could actually buy the majority of the cocktail items (and even the entree items) and hire a service team to heat and serve them using the buffet line method.

This!!! Exactly what I was thinking. If your family is adamant about helping, they can always prepare & freeze food a few weeks before hand ..then it's just heat & serve...this way family gets to help & relax. HTH

I'm really deciding against it, i've been searching for catering companies all day, I would hire help to serve the food and a day of coordinator so my family won't miss everything. I even moved my wedding date to 08/04/2013 so we can save more but idk how to change it on my profile. Caterers are soo expensive!!

They do but I doubt I can afford them. Im looking for other caterers since it's not mandatory to use their caterer.
