Dress fitting tips?

I'm going to my first dress fitting tomorrow.  I am kind of terrified because I haven't tried on my dress in 6 months, and last time I did I wasn't so crazy about it.  And I have nobody to take with me, so it's just going to be me and the people trying to sell me alterations.

Advice?  Things to bring?  Things I should ask/figure out tonight?

  • Definitely bring your shoes and any undergarments you plan to wear.  And your veil/hairpiece if you think that will help you envision the overall look.  Take pictures!

  • Also, try to style your hair in a similar fashion to how you will have it for the wedding (i.e., up, half-up). Just take your time looking at the pinnings, and if you don't like the bustle, ask for alternate bustle styles (if you're doing a bustle). If they're messing with the boob area, move around with it, bend over and check your cleavage. And yes, have them take lots of pictures of all angles! Good luck!

  • Yeah, I'm a little worried about the undergarment thing--I have Spanx and a crinoline, but I didn't buy a bra because I'm hoping they can sew cups in.  I have a regular strapless I might bring just in case.

  • I'm lurking on this because mine is on Saturday. I'm having a bit of a freakout about it because I haven't worn it or seen it out of the bag in a year. I haven't even bought shoes yet. :( Friday will be a busy evening. Good luck Brie, post pictures when you have them, you're going to look fantastic!
  • I think Kati covered it all.

My biggest mistake at my first fitting was leaving too late and basically having to jog 5 blocks.  In the summer.  I don't think the alterations woman appreciated my sweat.

  • Haha, I have deodorant in my desk, so I will re-apply before I leave work, julez!

Re: pictures.  FI leaves for his bachelor party in Vegas tomorrow, and wants to take my camera.  I may have to put the kibosh on that.

  • The checking the top of the dress tip is a great idea. You don't want to be this girl:

  • Haha AF.  I am so glad my dress has straps for that very reason!

    That and back fat elimination.

  • Brie, I am sure they can sew in cups for you so I wouldn't worry about that.  Otherwise I think the PPs covered it all!  Good luck!

Okay, one of you needs to get a disposable or borrow someone else's camera then. I'm serious, you need to see what your dress looks like from the back and on film, and close ups of the detail, etc. At least I found it very helpful to see angles on film that I couldn't see in person. Plus, looking at yourself as the "big picture" in a pic is way different than seeing it in person. And it is what everyone else will see at the wedding. Steal the camera back! :)

  • Other than what everyone else said: keep in mind that it is not going to look awesome while they are pinning it. In fact, it'll probably look pretty awful, because there will be folding and tucking and pinching, all of which made the dress (and me) look huge when I had mine fitted. I was freaked out. Just make sure it feels like it fits, and it will look great at the second fitting.
  • Good call, bg.  I have a zillion and one pictures of it,  but not bustled, and I have a feeling I'll want to see that.

I have a feeling the alterations are going to be pretty drastic.  It's at least 8 inches too long on me.

  • Just tell your FI that what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas so he shouldn't bring his camera.  Do his buddies really want him capturing all of that?? :)

  • Brie, if you want cups sewn in, I'd try to get one of the adhesive bras instead of a strapless - you don't want them to fit it over bulk that won't be there the day of the wedding.

Also, assuming that you have a seamstress/tailor who is sane and such, listen to what they suggest.  They've done this a LOT, and likely have good suggestions.  I don't mean accept a bustle you hate, but do accept if they tell you what you want and your dress don't go together for technical reasons.  (Not that they will, just. . . if.)

Yeah FI really wishes that the photos of his bach party didn't exist.  Luckily our friends have been good about keeping them off FB.
