Where can I find a dyeable tuxedo?

My fiancé wants a tie-dyed tux for our wedding, and I want to make that happen for him.  I'm planning to dye it myself but am having difficulties finding a dyeable tux.  Does anyone know of any stores or online retailers that supply this?

  • Well... thanks for the support, ladies
  • Try just buying a white tux, look for orgaic materials like cotton as it will take the dye better. Don't let rude people get you down, a tye dye tux would be awesome and bring a lot of personality to your wedding! Putting some tye dye accents on your attendants would be cool too like ties for the grooms men and sashes for the ladies, just dont over do it! Good luck, and definitely Share Pictures!!

  • I would recommend trying find a light colored suit & tux at a thrift store & try it out. This way if the look of it doesn't turn out to what he was hoping for, you didn't invest a lot of money into the idea. I'm just thinking that you probably won't get the bright colors that tye dye is typically known as. If it doesn't work out, you can probably find him socks and tie that are tye dye to bring the look into your wedding.
  • I agree with PPs.  A complete tie-dye suit will look absolutely ridiculous.  It won't look funky and offbeat, it will make the wedding look like a big joke.

If your FI wants tie-dye, have him wear a nice tan or charcoal suit and a tie-dye tie or even a tie-dye vest.

Here's my question. When you look at those pictures in 20 years? will you smile, or cringe/think "what was I thinking?"

If you think it will make you smile, go for it...but be aware that your guests will be taken aback.

I like the idea of letting him have a tie dye tie or socks, or suspenders....The whole tux might just be something you regret in 20 years when you look at pics
  • Not all weddings have to be traditional or uptight, if its something you'll find cute and funny, go for it, just make sure the rest of the wedding isn't overly formal. The linen suit someone else mentioned would probably work nicely. And I wouldn't worry about offending any guests, if they know you well enough to be invited to your wedding they probably know your sense of humor. If your invitations reflect the uniqueness of your wedding you'll have nothing to worry about althogh you may raise some eyebrows. Just don't expect everyone else to be in black tie formal attire.
  • There is a difference between "traditional and uptight" and looking ridiculous.  I can promise you that a tie died tux would be all the guests would be talking about over dinner.  You don't take a Mother Earth hippy idea, mix it with formal wear and expect it to come out well.  If you want formal wear,FI needs to  put on his big boy panties  and wear it as formal wear.  If you want tie died, I think Liatris gave you great suggestions.

I am a MOB and had 2 much older brothers who were as hippy as you could get.  I saw a couple of weddings back in the day that would have loved a tie dyed element.

Do you want people talking about how beautiful the wedding was or how bizarre your FI's tux was?  I can promise you that if you figure out how to do a tie dye tux, it will be the latter.
